2023.05.28 14:45 yungsinatra0 Control pad recommendations - between Saturn PRO and OG Gamesense Radar?

Hello everyone!
I've been following this subreddit for the past month, trying to find a suitable replacement for my trusty Gamesense Radar mousepad that I bought back in 2021. Overall, I'm satisfied with it, but there are times when it feels inconsistent. Since it has been two years, I think it's time for a change. I'm also concerned that my current Radar might be wearing down. I mainly play tactical FPS games like CSGO, and my sensitivity is 1.1 @ 800 dpi.
Initially, I considered getting a Zero/Saturn Pro in Soft, but after doing some research, I believe it might be too fast for my liking. Since I had a good experience with the Radar, I'd prefer something with more control. I'm looking for a mousepad that offers a bit more speed than the OG Radar but is still slower than something like the Saturn Pro. It should have stitched edges, no print, and overall good build quality. As a student, I'd like to avoid having to buy a new mousepad every six months, so durability is important. I live in the UK, so I have access to most of the mousepads discussed here.
Here are some mousepads I've been considering, but I'm uncertain which one to choose:

QCK/QCK Heavy/QCK+/etc: These are classic options, but I'm looking to try something different, and they don't have stitched edges.
Vaxee PA Black: This would have been my top choice, but I'm not a fan of the lack of stitched edges. I'm still open to considering it, though.
LGG Jupiter: I've come across positive reviews, but I think it might be too slow for my preferences, even compared to the OG Radar.
2023 Radar: This is an option, but I don't know much about it, to be honest.
Qinsui 2 PRO+: This one seems like a strong contender, but I'm unsure about its speed compared to the OG Radar.

These are just a few mousepads I've been looking at. I'm aware that there are others out there, such as the MM540 or GP4, which adds to my confusion about what to buy next. I would greatly appreciate any advice you can provide on which mousepad I should choose.

Gustavo Dudamel, the superstar maestro, will resign his post as music director of the Paris Opera in August, four years ahead of schedule and after just two seasons in the job, the company announced on Thursday.
Dudamel, 42, who also leads the Los Angeles Philharmonic and will take over as music and artistic director of the New York Philharmonic in 2026, said he was stepping down to spend more time with his family.
“It is with a heavy heart and after long consideration that I announce my resignation,” he said in a statement. “I have no plans other than to be with my loved ones, to whom I am deeply grateful for helping me to continue to be strong in my resolve to grow and remain challenged, both personally and artistically, each and every day.”
Dudamel’s two-year tenure will be one of the shortest in the Paris Opera’s recent history. His abrupt departure is unusual in the classical music industry, where conductors generally serve the duration of their contracts and seasons are typically planned years in advance. His resignation comes a few months after he made the surprise announcement that he would leave his post in Los Angeles, which he has held since 2009, for New York, when his contract expires at the end of the 2025-26 season.
Alexander Neef, the general director of the Paris Opera, praised Dudamel’s “special relationship” with the orchestra and said he respected his choice. He said in an interview that Dudamel had expressed concerns beginning in January about his ability to fulfill his duties, including devoting the time needed for the intense performance and rehearsal schedule that opera demands.
”In the end, he reached a conclusion that he could just not give to the institution what he believes the institution requires,” Neef said.
Over the past several months, Neef proposed ways to keep Dudamel in Paris.
“I did not try to twist his arm,” Neef said. “We played with different scenarios and arrangements of the schedule. But in the end, he just felt it was not sufficient for him to be able to own the title.”
Dudamel’s representatives said on Thursday that he was unavailable for an interview.
The opera house and Dudamel are still discussing what to do about his planned engagements for the 2023-24 season. He had been scheduled to lead a new production of Wagner’s “Lohengrin” and the Paris premiere of “The Exterminating Angel” by Thomas Adès, as well as several concerts with the orchestra.
Dudamel’s departure creates the possibility that he might deepen his commitment to the New York Philharmonic earlier than expected. Because of scheduling conflicts, he had not been planning to have much of a presence in New York until the 2026-27 season. Dudamel, who led the orchestra in Mahler’s Ninth Symphony last week, has no engagements in New York next season.
Deborah Borda, the Philharmonic’s president and chief executive, who helped start Dudamel’s career in Los Angeles nearly two decades ago and persuaded him to take the job in New York, said she hoped he would now be able to spend more time with the orchestra starting next season but that nothing had been discussed.
“He’s very clear that he doesn’t want to make that decision now,” she said in an interview.
When Dudamel took the New York job, some in the industry speculated that he was seeking to reduce his commute to Paris. But Borda said that Dudamel, who was born in Venezuela, had realized during the pandemic that he wanted to spend more time in Spain, which is now home to his wife, his 12-year-old son, his parents and his grandmother.
“No doubt he’ll take some criticism,” she said of his decision to resign. “But I think it’s a bold and important move.”
In Paris, Dudamel led high-profile productions of contemporary operas like John Adams’s “Nixon in China” and classics like Puccini’s “Turandot.” He appeared to be well regarded by the orchestra’s musicians and by Neef, though he sometimes earned mixed reviews from European critics. A production of Wagner’s “Tristan und Isolde” that he conducted earlier this year made headlines when its soprano was booed.
The opera house also appears to be grappling with some financial pressures. Planned appearances by the Paris Opera orchestra in London and Vienna in April were abruptly canceled. The Barbican Center in London said it was “due to factors that are currently making touring financially challenging” for the ensemble.
His appointment in 2021, for an initial term of six seasons, was considered a coup for the company, founded in 1669 as the Académie d’Opéra by Louis XIV. It was an unlikely union, given Dudamel’s packed schedule and frequent commitments in Los Angeles. And while he had earned fame and accolades as a symphonic conductor, he had less experience in opera.
Dudamel said at the time that he felt chemistry with the Paris Opera after his company debut in 2017 with “La Bohème.”
“I felt this connection with the house, the musicians, the choir, with the whole team,” he said in an interview with The New York Times in 2021. “I was here for one month and a half and I was feeling like I was at home.”
The departure of Dudamel leaves the Paris Opera in a difficult position. Neef said that the orchestra would rely on guest conductors to help fill gaps in coming seasons, and that the company would soon begin a search for a permanent leader with “the goal of finding the best person rather than the most readily available.”
“We are strong enough to go through this period while we look for someone new,” he said.
The company informed its 175 musicians of Dudamel’s decision on Thursday. Neef said some had noticed a change in their relationship with Dudamel over the past few months and were relieved that there was now a resolution.
“They were expecting something to happen,” he said. “There’s disappointment and sadness, but it’s also a moment of relief to know what’s been going on.”

Hey so I'm 20F and i gave my third NEET attempt this year. i am scoring decent but not completely sure if i will get in wala situation. I am on the fence. i started preparing after i completed my 12th that is in december 2020. i went to regular state board college with PCMB, was pretty unclear about career etc because of family situations, couldnt afford coaching so dropped the idea of competitive exams in 11th. During covid i realized i am not diligent enough to pursue pure science and commerce samajjh nahi aati, arts mein i am not even talented. Had a very strong inclination towards medical since i could remember. so decided ki yahi karna hai ab. finally mera "why" clear hogaya tha and abhi "how" baki tha. Joined the PW Yakeen batch of 2021, joined late so backlog etc etc mein pehlese hi dub rahi thi. i had trouble completing and understanding the syllabus, i could only do biology preoperly. i bombed my first drop first attempt by getting sick in the last month, classic food poisoning hogaya. (ps Stop eating outside food a month before your exams, thank me later), my older brother went through a surgery in august, September mein exam thi, I got distracted in getting him better and fir exam ke din wala mishap toh bohot memorable hai mightve made a post about it then. I scored 348/720 that year.
I realized ki gharpe rehna is very distracting, my family had a lot of financial situations before and during covid but it got better so i thought i should go to another city and prep, competitive environment bhi milega and would be far from family(bohot negative log hai). So i left for a city in my state which is known to house aspirants/coaching/toppers - (not KOTA). My parents had told me to find a hostel, find the classes etc that you want to go to and we will pay for it. I attended the lectures of some classes and hated their excecution i mean dropper ke batch mein 3 months GOC kon padhata hai, i got a feeling i'll be doomed if i join these classes. So i stayed in the hostel and enrolled in PW course again, this time only focused on phy/chem since bio i had done well earlier and i was consistently revising and solving bio questions.
now let me tell you something, for people who have stayed stuck in place in their life whose family and outside environment always feel like a prison unko tum bahar kisi environment mein jaake rakh do they taste freedom and for a while they go wild. Precisely what happened with me. See i went to a regular college but couldnt make a lot of friends as they already had theirs nd i felt a sense of inferiority there. All the confidence that i had in my academic abilities, of getting highest marks without studying too much prior to my 11th/12th was ripped off in college. The jump of PCMB was big for me and i had a tough time teaching everything to myself. i tried and failed in understanding concepts so i started shutting down. Everytime i would sit for lectures it used to feel everyone knows everything and theyre just here for the attendance. so basically i had no friends and no confidence. Coming here to this city i started making friends, going out, basically i was distracted from my purpose. It took me 4 months to get back to my sense for why i am here wala part.
During this time my parents were having the talks for getting divorced and my brother was applying for colleges abroad. It was depressing to even think about home. So i did the most classic thing i started escaping my situation by putting time in other people, you guessed it - BOYS. In cities like KOTA etc 75% of guys and girls are just there for timepass i was becoming that. i was giving into the cheap attention and validation. Girls and guys refrain from getting love bombed for when you are in your preparation jouner, no- no one will make your life better but you, no one cares if someone is giving you time they are taking yours. I started texting this guy and he was extremely desperate and i had developed a hobby of escaping my negative feelings.
i came to my senses in May 2022 and diligently began preparing again, while still texting that guy of course (utni buddhi bhi nahi hai mujhe mein, sigh.) I joined a test series and i scored well initially, i gained a very good confidence in test taking, i used to feel that maybe i am not smart enough to do neet because i didnt compete( i mean in classes/test wise last year). Tests really helped me. So how i bombed my 2nd attempt was i had completely looked over biology revision and revision in general of physics and chemistry. 2022 Neet bio had me crying because i knew while solving the questions that i think i am wrong by second guessing each question and i scored 402/720 that year.
My parents were fine, they had no particular reaction to me, they were disappointed but since my bro got admitted abroad they forgot about me. My brother left and i decided maybe i should take admisiion in BAMS. so through counselling i got in a very good BAMS college, but i felt since its going to take the time maybe i should give neet again and this time the motivation was also the fact that i dread ayurveda. I started self studying in February 2023 for neet 2023 and i have never studied like this before i revised, re- revised everything did not commit the mistake of skipping bio ncert, read it about 4 times cover to cover. I was so scared and fearful of being stuck in BAMS and my parents expectations, my brothers expectations, for settling in life,etc . Also i am a reserved candidate (there comes the hate) i began thinking that my cut off is low and it will be shameful if i wont be able to reach that even after reservation and 2 attempts. I am admitted in the top Bams cllg of my state so there is no discrimination per se but the others do ask your caste and marks and all that shenanigans. i got stressed out about all of that and started overthinking. I stopped sleeping, i slept for 2 hours each day, stopped going to college, ate food only once a day, stopped stepping outside, avoided everyone. I directly and indirectly played russian roulette and shot myself in the foot. i became severely depressed a week before the paper. i burned out, i was contemplating if i should give the paper on the xam day. but i still did go. the paper went fine. i mean i though it did. i have refrained myself from getting into the cut off etc stuff, just checked Aakaash answer key thats it.
Some part of me thinks i will get through and the other part of me just thinks would i have to do this again next year? See BAMS is a good course but even the teachers would constantly compare mbbs/bams there is this constant inferiority, My professor said for girls it gets good marriage prospects. I think i am meant for more even if i have done less actions to prove it. At this point of time i have given up over the whole argument that i am behind in life than other matlab main hu hi peeche abhi, my friends graduated this year and baaki ke next year karenge. i cannot let mbbs go from my mind, i cannot stop thinking should i do it properly this time? i cannot imagine myself reciting Shloks and reading Padarth Vigyan/ Sanskrit (no hate to Ayurveda but i am not a fan). Should i let my dream go and settle? I have tried really hard to find if i have passion in anything else but i dont. Im just a ashell of a human being i used to be. I know an exam should not decide/define your life but the background where i come from this exam is deciding it. I am aware that i am responsible for all of this.

🇲🇽 Coach Black is promoted to HC/DC from last year's DC duties. He brings along quite a few countrymen to take on key coaching positions this year. The likes of 🇲🇽 Coach Micky Romero to lead the offense, 🇲🇽 Eduardo Yagues to develope the Offensive Line or 🇲🇽 Genaro Alfonsin, former CFL player, as DB coach. Some familiar faces are back for another run too like 🇺🇸 Chase Baker, former NFL player, as a Defensive Line coach or 🇪🇸 Victor Martin to take again on WRs. 🇺🇸 Alexander Durazo signs this year to take the lead of special teams & LBs unit.
Dragons fans are very excited with coach Black promotion to HC position while keeping DC duties. Coach Black made an amazing job last year by unexpectedly building a proficient defensive unit at ELF level. Arguably, one of the best defenses in the league. His comeback has also been cheered by the players themselves who talk wonderful things of his leadership, football knowledge, passion and coaching style. The franchise has heavily invested in the coaching staff this season. Special mention to coach Eduardo Yagues. Over two decades coaching OL players at City College of San Francisco, brings over his knowledge to make the OL to grow and perform at its best. It is well known that Spanish football is not overloaded with homegrown talent and the departures of key Spanish players to other ELF teams added salt to the injury. Therefore, it was time for an audacious approach: Develope better and faster the rich young but somehow raw talent available in the country. Conclusion is that some of the biggest Dragons signings this Offseason are not in the field but by the sidelines. Be ready, dear readers, for a "spicy" Mexican branch of American Football.

Quarterback: Big change of style in this position. Dragons move from the athletic and open play specialist in Zach Edwards to a more classic pocket QB in 🇺🇸 Connor Miller. It is well known the capacity of Zach in extending broken plays and run for his life when necessary. Instead, Connor will most likely provide a different approach to the offense, exploiting multiple reads within the security of the pocket. Unlike Zach, Connor has proved in his successful career in Europe to be a vocal leader that has the ability to gather individuals towards a common objective. Dragons fans are willing and excited to embrace this shift of paradigm in the most important position in football, QB.
Wide Receivers: This unit has been almost entirely revamped. Only young local star and fan favorite 🇪🇸 Jordi Torrededia comes back to the team to continue his solid progression in his 3rd season in the league. Kyle Sweet is a sensible lost for Dragons. To fill this shoes comes 🇺🇸 Josh Johnston right off from Denver Broncos mini-camp. Johnston finished his college career this last season with Colorado School of Mines (NCAA D-2) where he posted top stats and earned multiple awards. 🇸🇪 Theodor Landstrom and 🇫🇷 Melvin Palin complete the poker of aces to follow in this unit. Palin has a long experience playing college football in Canada. Last year he moved to GFL to play with Dusseldorf Panthers. Landstrom comes from Telfs Patriots (AFL) where he posted 55 rec for 888 yds and 9 TD in 12 games.
Tight Ends: Big hopes and excitement around newly signed 🇪🇸 Raul Cernuda from Badalona Dracs (LNFA). A top Spanish player who finally makes the move and joins Dragons to showcase his skills at ELF level. Very good hands adds to his big size and body frame. Disciplined and good blocker, stands out for his goods hands to catch any pass coming his way. On the cons...lacks speed. Youngster 🇪🇸 Elias Rodriguez moves from 3rd string RB to TE in his 3rd season with the team.
Running Backs: 3rd year veteran 🇪🇸 Toni Monton returns to the team. Elusive once he gets his wheels spinning, brings good hands to the mix too. New signing 🇪🇸 Eduard Molina will be Toni's partner in crime in this unit. Eduard comes from having a monster season with Badalona Dracs (LNFA) this last year. Very good stats with 1121 run yds and 13 TD in 8 games.
Offensive Line: Most likely the line most affected by departures of homegrowns players this offseason. The losses of last year starters Eduardo Sanchez and Celestin Ngimbi to Musketeers and Gabriel Rodriguez to Guards called for bold action from the franchise. Last year's starters 🇪🇸 Elvys Núñez who most likely will take on C duties and 🇪🇸 Jose Ariza return to the team. Rotation player 🇪🇸 Mikel Gómez will be promoted to the starting unit as per sources. After that, new faces all over. 🇳🇴 Jonas Hagerup has already 2 years experience in the league after stints in Leipzig Kings (2021) and Wroclaw Panthers (2022) and 🇬🇧 Ben Dixon comes from Hamburg Huskies (GFL2). Youngsters 🇪🇸 David Culebras and 🇪🇸 Diego Varela from reigning Spanish Champs Las Rozas Black Demons should add depth to the line. 🇪🇸 Enzo Biasizzo from Dragons Academy (LNFA Jr) could be an unexpected surprise as season moves along. Nonetheless, the biggest signing this Offseason in this unit is coach Yagues. He has been given the mission of crafting the interesting material he has been given into a proficient unit at ELF level.
OFFENSE FINAL COMMENTS: Many new faces in this side of the ball. Only 6 players returning from last year's roster. The capacity of coaches Black, Micky and Yagues to swiftly develope chemistry and glue this unit will determine Dragons fate this season. We can expect Dragons to remain pass focused but we also expect to be far more unpredictable than previous years by moving away from the one-dimensional, Zach to Sweet/Constant, approach of previous coaches. Coaching staff is fully determined to implement a much richer offensive approach and get more players involved in offense. Overall, good vibes coming from training camp...

Defensive Line: One of the units where Dragons fans are more eager to see on the field. Although the key losses of homegrowns Alejandro Fernandez to Fire and Yago Rivero to Potsdam Royals (GFL) plus Michael Sam retirement from football, big things are expected from the DL. Key DTs 🇪🇸 Sebastian Bowen and 🇪🇸 Daniel Franco are back for another season. DE/rusher 🇺🇸 Darius Slade has impressed in training camp with his technique, athletics and implication with the team. Experienced 🇸🇪🇺🇸 Benjamin Egbudiwe brings more fire power to the line. Newly signed youngsters 🇪🇸 Mamadou Ka Thiobane from Terrassa Reds (LNFA), 🇪🇸 Diego Paz from Las Rozas Black Demons (LNFA) and 🇪🇸 Leo Rovesti from Alcobendas Cavaliers (LNFA) have already made some eyebrows rise in training camp. Safeties: Another unit ready to brightly shine this season. 🇺🇸 Luke Glenna comes right off the University of St Thomas Minnesota (NCAA D-1) where he earned All American team and All Conference first team honors in 2022. Fan favorite 🇦🇷 Lautaro Frecha comes back for his 3rd season with the team and 🇪🇸 Jorge Félix Velasco is back too to complete the transition to S from LB that coach Black already envisioned last season. 🇪🇸 Hugo Minguez from Las Rozas Black Demons (LNFA) is another addition that might surprise as the season evolves.
Cornerbacks: Good talent in this unit but it might be the thiner unit in defense at this moment. Team captain 🇪🇸 Jordi Brugnani and 🇪🇸 Lucas Masero return to lead this unit for a 3rd season in a row. Experienced DB 🇪🇸 Julio Aguado from Las Rozas Black Demons (LNFA) and young but very promising prospect 🇪🇸🇩🇪 Pascal Sendelbach from Dragons Academy (LNFA Jr) will need to adjust quickly to the league and step up to help consolidate this unit.
DEFENSE FINAL COMMENTS: Defense has been reloaded and ready to go again after an already good performance last year. Defense will need to take the lead early in the season so that the offense earns time to get fully oiled in the first games of the season. Many team veterans are back, key import signings are giving out good vibes in training camp and a loaded promotion of promising young players seems a good receipt for success. And above all, defensive mastermind in coach Black ruling them all.
*SPECIAL TEAMS
Kicker: 🇪🇸 Luis Cereceda. After year and a half under Giorgio Tavecchio wings as a mentor, he is now ready to take charge of this position.

2023.05.28 10:06 Geist_Lain Texas AG Ken Paxton impeached, suspended from duties; will face Senate trial

Defying a last-minute appeal by former President Donald Trump, the Texas House voted overwhelmingly Saturday to impeach Attorney General Ken Paxton, suspending him from office over allegations of misconduct that included bribery and abuse of office.

The vote to adopt the 20 articles of impeachment was 121-23.
The stunning vote came two days after an investigative committee unveiled the articles — and two days before the close of a biennial legislative session that saw significant right-wing victories, including a ban on transgender health care for minors and new restrictions on public universities’ diversity efforts.
The vote revealed substantial divisions within the Republican Party of Texas — the largest, richest and most powerful state GOP party in the United States. Although the party has won every statewide election for a quarter-century and has controlled both houses of the Legislature since 2003, it has deep underlying fissures, many of them exacerbated by Trump’s rise and influence.
Few attorneys general have been as prominent as Paxton, who made a career of suing the Obama and Biden administrations. One of Trump’s closest allies in Texas, along with Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, Paxton unsuccessfully sued to challenge the 2020 presidential election results in four states.
Attention now shifts to the Texas Senate, which will conduct a trial with senators acting as jurors and designated House members presenting their case as impeachment managers.
Permanently removing Paxton from office and barring him from holding future elected office in Texas would require the support of two-thirds of senators.
Impeachment was supported by 60 Republicans, including Speaker Dade Phelan and all five of the representatives from Collin County — where Paxton and his wife have lived for decades. All 23 votes in opposition came from Republicans.
Afterward, Paxton called the vote “illegal, unethical, and profoundly unjust,” adding that he looked forward to a quick resolution in the Senate.
The move to impeach came less than a week after the House General Investigating Committee revealed that it was investigating Paxton for what members described as a yearslong pattern of misconduct and questionable actions that include bribery, dereliction of duty and obstruction of justice. They presented the case against him Saturday, acknowledging the weight of their actions.
“Today is a very grim and difficult day for this House and for the state of Texas,” Rep. David Spiller, R-Jacksboro, a committee member, told House members.
“We have a duty and an obligation to protect the citizens of Texas from elected officials who abuse their office and their powers for personal gain,” Spiller said. “As a body, we should not be complicit in allowing that behavior.”
Paxton supporters criticized the impeachment proceedings as rushed, secretive and based on hearsay accounts of actions taken by Paxton, who they said was not given the opportunity to defend himself to the investigating committee.
“This process is indefensible,” said Rep. John Smithee, R-Amarillo, who complained that the vote was taking place on a holiday weekend before members had time to conduct a thorough review of the accusations. “It concerns me a lot because today it could be General Paxton, tomorrow it could be you and the next day it could be me.”
Saturday’s vote temporarily removes a controversial but influential Republican figure in Texas and nationally. He has led an office that initiated lawsuits that overturned or blocked major Biden and Obama administration policies, particularly on immigration; sought to reverse Trump’s electoral defeat in 2020; aggressively pursued voter fraud claims; and targeted hospitals that provided gender care to minors.
The Legislature had impeached state officials just twice since 1876 — and never an attorney general — but the House committee members who proposed impeachment argued Saturday that Paxton’s misconduct in office was so egregious that it warranted his removal.
“This gentleman is no longer fit for service or for office,” said committee member Rep. Ann Johnson, D-Houston. “Either this is going to be the beginning of the end of his criminal reign, or God help us with the harms that will come to all Texans if he's allowed to stay the top cop on the take, if millions of Texans can’t trust us to do the right thing, right here, right now.”
Rep. Charlie Geren, R-Fort Worth, a member of the investigative committee, used his presentation time to criticize Paxton for calling representatives as they worked on the House floor to “personally threaten them with political consequences in the next election” if they supported impeachment.
Speaking against impeachment, Rep. Tony Tinderholt, R-Arlington, called the process “wrong.”
“Don’t end our session this way. Don’t tarnish this institution,” Tinderholt said. “Don’t cheapen the act of impeachment. Don’t undermine the will of the voters. Don’t give Democrats another victory handed to them on a silver platter.”
The vote came as hardline conservatives supportive of Paxton’s aggressive strategy of suing the Biden administration were lining up in support of him. Trump — a close political ally to Paxton — blasted the impeachment proceedings as an attempt to unseat “the most hard working and effective” attorney general and thwart the “large number of American Patriots” who voted for Paxton.
Trump vowed to target any Republican who supported impeaching Paxton, adding after the vote: “What is our Country coming to?” In the evening, he called Abbott “missing in action,” asking followers on his Truth Social network, “Where is the Governor of Texas on his Attorney General’s Impeachment?”
As lawmakers listened to the committee members make their case, Paxton took to social media to boost conservatives who had come to his defense, including Trump, U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Georgia, and conservative radio host Grant Stinchfield, who tweeted, “Kangaroo Court in Texas.”
About 90 minutes into the debate, the official Twitter account of the Texas attorney general’s office began tweeting at members of the committee to challenge some of the claims being made.
“Please tell the truth,” the agency’s account said.
Under the Texas Constitution, Paxton is suspended from office pending the outcome of the Senate trial. The Senate had recessed before the House voted to impeach, and Patrick, who presides over the Senate, did not immediately respond to a request for comment about a timeline for an impeachment trial.
Because Paxton was impeached while the Legislature was in session, the Texas Constitution requires the Senate to remain in Austin after the regular session ends Monday or set a trial date for the future, with no deadline for a trial spelled out in the law.
The constitution also allows the governor to appoint a provisional replacement. Gov. Greg Abbott had not weighed in on the calls to impeach Paxton and his office did not immediately respond to a request for comment Saturday.
Impeachment represents the greatest political threat to date for Paxton, who has been reelected twice despite a 2015 indictment for felony securities fraud and an ongoing federal investigation into allegations of official misconduct that began in 2020.
The impeachment vote capped a tumultuous week at the Capitol. From Tuesday to Thursday:
Paxton abruptly accused Phelan of presiding over the chamber while drunk and demanded that he resign.
The House General Investigating Committee revealed it had been investigating Paxton in secret since March.
The committee heard a three-hour presentation from its investigators detailing allegations of corruption against the attorney general.
The committee’s three Republicans and two Democrats voted to forward 20 articles of impeachment to the full House.
Paxton, who was comfortably elected to a third term last year, made a rare appearance before assembled reporters Friday to criticize the process, saying he was not given a chance to present favorable evidence. He called impeachment an effort by Democrats and “liberal” Republicans to remove him from office, violating the will of voters and sidelining an effective warrior against Biden administration policies.
“The corrupt politicians in the Texas House are demonstrating that blind loyalty to Speaker Dade Phelan is more important than upholding their oath of office,” Paxton said. He added, “They are showcasing their absolute contempt for the electoral process.”
Many of the articles of impeachment focused on allegations that Paxton had repeatedly abused his powers of office to help a political donor and friend, Austin real estate developer Nate Paul.
In fall 2020, eight top deputies in the attorney general’s office approached federal and state investigators to report their concerns about Paxton’s relationship with Paul.
All eight quit or were fired in the following months, and most of the details of their allegations against Paxton were revealed in a lawsuit by four former executives who claim they were fired — in violation of the Texas Whistleblower Act — in retaliation for reporting Paxton to the authorities. Paxton’s bid to dismiss the lawsuit is awaiting action by the Dallas-based 5th Court of Appeals.
According to the lawsuit, the whistleblowers accused Paxton of engaging in a series of “intense and bizarre” actions to help Paul, including intervening in an open-records case to help Paul gain documents from federal and state investigations into the real estate investor’s businesses. They also accused Paxton of directing his agency to intervene in a lawsuit between Paul and a charity, pushing through a rushed legal opinion to help Paul avoid a pending foreclosure sale on properties and ignoring agency rules to hire an outside lawyer to pursue an investigation helpful to Paul’s businesses.
In return, the whistleblower lawsuit alleged, Paul paid for all or part of a major renovation of a home Paxton owns in Austin. Paul also helped Paxton keep an extramarital affair quiet by employing the woman Paxton had been seeing, the lawsuit said, adding that the attorney general may also have been motivated by a $25,000 contribution Paul made to Paxton’s campaign in 2018.
In their report to the House General Investigating Committee on Wednesday, the panel’s investigators concluded that Paxton may have committed numerous crimes and violated his oath of office.
Investigators said possible felonies included abuse of official capacity by, among other actions, diverting staff time to help Paul at a labor cost of at least $72,000; misuse of official information by possibly helping Paul gain access to investigative documents; and retaliation and official oppression by firing employees who complained of Paxton’s actions to the FBI.
The articles of impeachment accused Paxton of accepting bribes, disregarding his official duties and misapplying public resources to help Paul.
The articles also referred to felony charges of securities fraud, and one felony count of failing to register with state securities officials, that have been pending against Paxton since 2015, months after he took office as attorney general. The fraud charges stem from Paxton’s work in 2011 to solicit investors in Servergy Inc. without disclosing that the McKinney company was paying him for the work.
The impeachment articles also accused Paxton of obstruction of justice by acting to delay the criminal cases with legal challenges and because a Paxton donor pursued legal action that limited the pay to prosecutors in the case, causing further delays “to Paxton’s advantage.”
Taken in total, the accusations showed a pattern of dereliction of duty in violation of the Texas Constitution, Paxton’s oaths of office and state laws against public officials acting against the public’s interest, the impeachment resolution said.
“Paxton engaged in misconduct, private or public, of such character as to indicate his unfitness for office,” the articles said.
An attorney general had never before been impeached by the Legislature, an extraordinary step that lawmakers have reserved for public officials who faced serious allegations of misconduct. Only two Texas officials have been removed from office by Senate conviction, Gov. James Ferguson in 1917 and District Judge O.P. Carrillo in 1975.
If Paxton is to survive, he will need to secure the support of 11 senators. With the 12 Democratic senators likely to support his removal, any votes for acquittal would need to come from the 19 Republican members.
Several Republican senators issued statements Saturday evening warning constituents and others that their role as jurors in the upcoming impeachment trial prohibited them from discussing the case. In a television interview Thursday, Patrick said merely that he believed senators would be responsible jurors and “do their duty.”
A complicating factor is Sen. Angela Paxton, R-McKinney, Paxton’s wife. State law requires all senators to attend an impeachment trial, though whether she will recuse herself from voting is unclear.
Paxton’s political base lies in the far-right faction of the Republican Party, where he has positioned himself as a champion of conservative causes and a thorn in the side of Democratic President Joe Biden. Paxton has criticized his opponents as RINOs (Republicans in name only) who “want nothing more than to sabotage our legal challenges to Biden’s extremist agenda by taking me out.”
He also retained the backing of the state Republican Party, led by former state Rep. Matt Rinaldi, who frequently attacks Republicans he considers to be insufficiently conservative. So I saw UFest at Desert Sky Pavilion (it is now Talking Stick Ampletheater this year) and Red Hot Chili Peppers a few weeks back and I realized that I am too old to go to shows solo. I am looking for a second.
I want to find a relationship. When I say a relationship I do not want sex. Don't get me wrong, sex is fine. But I need an emotional connection to have it.
My name is Michael. I am live in Arizona (originally from Long Island, NY.) I currently am 35, turning 36 in a week and I am into a lot of different music. Rock, punk, metal, hard rock, pop, country and some R&B and those classical/jazz covers too.
I am a special education teacher and I am also going to graduate school for it. If you are not OK with me having that time commitment, we wouldn't work out. Speaking of time commitments and work out, I do work out. Mostly eliptical and yoga with some other cardio thrown in. I know that isn't always popular but it is for my health. I lost 80-90 pounds (I've plateaued and it fluctuates) since September 2021.
