I (21F) have always had a turbulent relationship with my mother. I am currently almost no contact except for the occasional holiday she will show up to the family event. Now, I’ve blacked out a fair amount of my childhood due to trauma and such, but recently I was talking with my grandmother (the woman who raised me in my mothers absence) and it felt like a puzzle piece just clicked.
My mother is an extreme drug addict. I’m talking crack, heroine, anything she can get her hands on. She was fired from her fancy nursing job almost 8 years ago for stealing from the medicine cabinet. Because of this, she would always have strange characters around the house. Boyfriends, friends, dealers. I’m no stranger to sexual harassment or abuse. Its loomed over me my entire childhood/preteen years.
Now I’m writing this because I’d always felt like I’d blacked out something bad. It’s a major anxiety of mine. Anyway, tonight I was talking to my grandma about childhood & how weird my mother seemed to act. She didn’t like me or my little brother sleeping in our own beds. I mean, it was a weird age we finally did start sleeping separately. Like 13/14. She conditioned us to need her for basic hygiene things as well. For example, she gave us baths/showered with us up until around the same age. I can remember being at my dads house and begging him to take me to her to do my hair because I couldn’t do it right without her. She also was very concerned with when I would start growing pubic hair and would make me show it to her.
She would also do the basic violating privacy things as well. Look through our phones, crawl into our beds at night, invade personal space. She’d convince me that my dad wasn’t paying child support (he was, she was just blowing it on crack). And just generally would manipulate me into hating him. Sometimes she’d wrestle me? I’m not sure how to explain it, we’d be arguing and she’d straight up act like a 4 year old and start wrestling/fighting me. She did that a lot.
So, now what I’m writing about. My grandma and I approached the topic of my mothers revolving door of boyfriends and the consequences of that. Somehow I found myself talking about her weird behavior. As soon as I started talking I kinda just word vomited. There was a night that she had walked into my room (I was probably 12/13) and I was “experimenting” as a preteen does. I don’t exactly remember what happened after that. I think she said something along the lines of “what are you doing” and stared for a minute. Then I remember her getting into my bed and wrapping her arms around me. It’s all so fuzzy I don’t even know what happened after that. But I know the feeling, I remember how I felt. I’m nauseous thinking about it. I don’t know what happened, I’m not sure I want to know what happened. And I can’t ask her, I’m humiliated even thinking about it.
Sex is kind of difficult for me, I’ve always had a hard time speaking up for what I want. It’s like I’m incapable of it. I’m seeing this amazing guy who wants me to feel good, only person to ever make me finish. He wants me to tell him what I want. And I feel so bad, I can’t. I can’t tell him what I want because I don’t know. It’s like I’ve never had the opportunity to know. Or i guess, it feels like I don’t deserve to know what I want. I’m not sure I’m explaining it well.
It’s been so long since I’ve thought about it. These days I don’t even truly remember what it felt like to be loved by a mother, or if I ever felt it. She’s kind of just a smear on my otherwise decent childhood/life. I had a good father who did what he could, a decent childhood, an amazing grandma who stepped in. I don’t know what happened, I don’t know if I want answers yet. Am I crazy? Am I just imagining it? Did she effect my relationship with sex now? Am I insane for even drawing that connection? I’ve never been overcome with such emotion in my life, it felt like a ton of rocks hit me.
I guess it’s still fresh in my mind and I’m looking for guidance. Any input would be appreciated.

2023.03.24 07:32 StressFart I (34m) don't want to speak to my biological father (60m) anymore and I don't know how to end the relationship without causing issues with my Siblings.

How do I tell my biological father that I no longer want to speak or have a relationship with him without causing issues with my other siblings?
I didn't grow up with or knowing who my biological father was nor any siblings from that side. He and my late mother had a short lived relationship which resulted in me being born and then she for some reason breaking it off and leaving. I won't go into details of what I know on that as I've decided that things happened, people make bad decisions which don't necessarily sum them up as people.. and to leave it at that, I wasn't around to witness. I had no contact with that side until I was 20 y/o, but being I was a brown skinned kid in a white family I caught on at a very early age and began asking questions. I took the information I had and began searching as I wanted to find my siblings, I just wanted to know who they are, what they look like, if we were alike. Deep down, knowing my father was cool, but that was never what I cared about. I posted the info I had on a lost family/friend type forum like 14/15 years ago. Within 6 months, one of my sisters(40?f) stumbled upon it by merely searching for family member names while purely bored like we all have done and the posted info was eerily close. She searched my name, found me on Myspace and saw I looked EXACTLY like our brother(40?m) and messaged me. The rest is history. ---- Since finding them, I've had a decent but not so much a movie style happy ending type relationship with them. I'm totally fine with that, it's still... awkward, even after 14 years. I've physically met them no more than 3/4 times max(some only once), don't really talk or keep close to any of them aside from one sister(38?f(let's call her SIS)). SIS and I have grown fairly close, she's told me of their life and about folks in moderate detail good/bad... SIS has had a ROUGH life and still talks with me at least a few times a month. One thing to note is they all are mostly on the opposite side of the country with the closest being 16ish hours away. So visiting has always been extreme and only I have ever gone to them.
Also, it's important to note that not a single soul on that side knew anything about my existence before the miraculous discovery that day, although my father claims to have spent years trying to find me. I don't know if it's true, but if that was the case, somebody would know, right? Nobody did and they all were shocked, all 100+ relatives on that family.
Over the years, I have kept in touch with my bio father fairly well. Multiple times per year we'd have LONG 2/3 hour conversations, catching up, discussing family, funny/eery similarities, etc. There have been a few times that we had gotten into disagreements for various reasons. Once he tried to check me in a manner that I should respect him because he "is my fatheelder", because I said a cuss word, not at him at all or anybody, just something I was rambling on. I quickly/sternly shut that down, because in my eyes that dynamic doesn't exist. He called me "young man", to which I told him I raised myself practically from a masculinity perspective, figuring life out & to back the hell up.
I also started to pick up on manipulative tendencies from him over the years. Kind of in a way where if he didn't get his way or if I didn't fully agree with him on something he'd start to get a bit of an attitude, talking over me or even not considering a single point on I'd debate on. At least a few times if I hadn't been able to return his missed call for, let's say, half a day or two, he would proceed to blow mine and my wife's phone up with calls, voicemails and texts, kind of like a clingy/desperate EX. It didn't matter if I would text back and let him know I would or that, "Hey I'm super busy". If it wasn't when he wanted it, he would start up. Overtime, this gradually was more frequent even when we actually spoke more often during any given time period.
Years back, I did send him some cash as he needed it for a bit of food/small bills once or twice. January 2022, I did again, this time a few hundred. I then quit(unwisely) my job in March and was unemployed for about a month before I landed a new much better role and paying job. I was super happy and did boast just a bit to a few family members as well as my bio father because I felt really accomplished and excited to be able to do more for my family. In April, I found out SIS was in jail. Due to health concerns with her, and no help from ANY family member on that side after asking, I paid her bail, just shy of a grand. It was tough at the time due to recovering from unemployment, but I didn't want her in there any longer. But, SIS has tried to pay me back recently (last month)but I've asked her to use it for her kids instead, have some fun as well as get the help she needs, anything. She still mailed me a check for a portion cause she felt guilty, but I legit didn't care or even cash it, I'll live. She has been seriously trying and is really doing much better so that's another reason I'm ok with it and that I can trust her. Her kids are adorable and it's all her doing, she's a great mother.... Sometimes people make mistakes.
At the end of May, my father asked again for money. This time it was about $500 for a tax bill. Once again, still recovering from that period and helping SIS but I had it. I specifically told him I could help him. However, I genuinely and kindly requested that he check if anybody else was able and willing to help him and that if nobody could, I would do it 100%. In my opinion, that's totally reasonable and if the roles were reversed, I would be very happy to ask around, because I know I could fall back to him.
This is when he sent a long winded text to me. He stated that others have been doing what they can to "do their part" and that "you said you're making all that money and that you can help". Then said "nevermind, I'll figure it out, not going to rob a bank or nothing but forget about it". The tone of this text was clearly argumentive and in hindsight quite manipulative. He never asked anybody.
Don't know why but I proceeded to help him out, I think out of pure annoyance. He gave the info to login to the county so I could pay directly instead of giving him cash, so at least that wasn't a lie. Going forward, I tried to forget about it but couldn't. Then I spoke to SIS about it a few months later. She specifically told me that there were times that other family members had given him money to help buy HIS children stuff like clothes and school supplies. He would spend it on alcohol and even drugs to the point where the family would take the kids themselves to get what they needed which still wasn't enough but they tried. They couldn't trust him. I also recall another sibling saying something somewhat cryptic 10ish years back about not giving money to him and I didn't quite compute that entirely. I also know directly from him that he spent time in prison on drug charges. But it all clicked when SIS told me that last year, finally.
Since about October, I really just have no desire to speak with him. I haven't answered anything from him, he blows our phones up, just last week he called us 20 times in a few hours.
At this point, I have decided I just don't have the mental energy or care to speak with my father, because to me, what I've put together is more than just a mistake, it tells me he isn't the good guy he makes himself out to be. I've reached a point in my life that I don't have time for sources of negativity. Even on my mother's side, they committed an atrocious act by secretly burying her ashes against her final wishes with our grandmother (my mom died years before but we let Grandma keep the urn before we spread the ashes until she passed). She DID NOT WANT TO BE IN A COFFIN, she told me that, nearly with tears in her eyes before. They didn't tell us, we found out when the preacher said our grandmother was being lowered into the ground and that our mother was with her, right then! My brothers and I have totally cut them off.
I've been through alot myself, busted my fucking ass to get to where I am in unimaginable ways in order to provide everything for my wife and kids. I've shown people my resume and shared a bit of my life and almost everyone is shocked. I don't have the energy for much more than my wife/kids and they are all I care about and are all I WANT to care about. I am mentally exhausted, dealt with depression, physically roughed up. Sources of negativity need to be gone so I can focus on bettering myself and being a good example for my children and a good husband.
So, I'm just done with speaking to my Father, I don't care about him, like I couldn't shed a tear. Any emotions I express here are not because of him, it's because I want the negativity gone. Manipulation gone. Tantrums gone, my kids do enough of that, but they are children, they have an excuse. I don't know how to tell my father, don't know if I should call or even text, or if I should be 100% polite. Not sure at all how to proceed here and close this chapter and any advice or even criticism is appreciated. I know I'm not always right but I know what I want. One thing for sure is I don't want to cause collateral damage with my other siblings, I still would like to be siblings with them. I don't know how they'll take it and I'm sure that he will make it a sob story either way I try to do it. I can't make everyone happy though.
Sorry for over explaining everything, just felt necessary to fully describe the dilemma I am in... And also a bit of venting. Let me know your thoughts of how I should proceed. Thank you.
TL:DR: I don't want to speak to my biological father anymore due to manipulation, I don't have the energy for it anymore. But I don't know how to break it off with minimal collateral damage to other relationships with my siblings from that side.

- Perceval is disheveled and has beige, splotchy skin. His yellow, dreary eyes shine through his greasy black hair. The dandruff receptacles he calls shoulders droop below his clavicle. His gaunt frame is accented with an audacious stride, which comes from the same place his extra weight does: an occasionally dysfunctional prosthetic leg. It’s a dull brass color with cogs at the knee and springs below the false kneecap, which appear shined due to the fact that it rubs up against his flowing black cloak with each step. He carries a crudely patched burlap sack, off of which hangs a flask and a measure of rope.

- Skepticism: Perceval isn’t one to fall for grifts. Snake oil salesmen don’t impress him and his psyche is bound tightly. Masters of mentalism and psychics have trouble prying into his mind.
- False leg: Born without a right leg, Perceval was equipped with a prosthetic leg made of cogs, springs and whatever was lying around the shop. His movement speed and mobility are generally uninhibited but worsen when his leg isn’t properly oiled and wound. (Sometimes sprockets dislocate for seemingly no reason) This also means he is less vulnerable to tripping attempts made on his right leg, due to the heftiness of his artificial appendage.
- Bad blood: Moore’s former appendage was infected with some nasty magic. Because of a lingering curse, he has an increased vulnerability to necrotic damage. (+2) He has nerve pain that flares up whenever necromantic magic is nearby, which serves as an early warning of danger or a tool for detecting dealers in the dark arts.
- Equipment: Rusty longsword, pot-lid shield and a hand-axe. Backpack includes a crowbar, 3 torches, a tinderbox, 5 days worth of rations, a medium water-skin, a flask and a bear trap. Carries 50 feet of rope strapped to the bag.

- Hilda Moore, a servant in the court of Lord Alabaster, was infected with a wicked blight that led to her death during childbirth. Her lone offspring Perceval, (named after her last living relative, a lord in a far away land), suffered the same terrible disease that afflicted his mother. This led to the medically necessary amputation of his hands at the forearm, and right leg at the middle-thigh. Before handing the child over to a local parish, a professor in Alabaster’s court named Dr. Solomon Fabian caught wind of the sorrowful situation and whisked the child away to his observatory in Hedgeborn. Raised in a gilded tower, hidden in a lush valley, the boy grew to be curious, though he was tragically ill equipped for exploration.
Professor Fabian began conducting experimental treatments and procedures on the boy beginning at the age of 7. It wasn’t until age 10 that the boy's adopted hands stayed attached. When the boy was 13, Fabian resorted to a deal containing unfavorable terms in order to afford his greatest experiment the gift of stride. In exchange for a leg preserved with magic, Fabian agreed to construct a ward for the Criminal titan Botwell Hogspore. After the exchange was made, the professor struggled to cut ties with the greedy baron who insisted on mutual benefit via immoral means.
The new limb granted Perceval freedom of movement, but something in his spirit changed. His disposition became bitter and tyrannical. His skin withered and his eyes seared a frightful yellow. Seeing how the magic changed the boy, the professor replaced the leg with a metallic remnant of an old hobby. Dissolving the pact with Hogspore meant certain doom, but Fabian’s conscience could bear it no longer. On his 14th birthday, Perceval watched his only real family die before his eyes a second time. Hogspore spared the boy, but banished him from Hedgeborn for all of his cursed days. After drifting from odd job to odd job, Perceval finds himself itching for vengeance.

- Perceval is a binge drinker, and on days he can’t trek very far he’s barely functional. He has a very all or nothing attitude about travel and alcohol.
- He isn’t loyal to any deity or religion, which is ironic considering he could really use some magical help and healing. He resents Paladins especially.
- He’s got no connections and the little family that he has resent him.
- He’s physically frightening. He scares children.
- He’s got a few disabilities. They wouldn’t be much of an issue but he doesn’t have access to the proper medication. This means he has chronic pain in his hands and he gets eye twitching due to the necromantic juju in his blood. Not to mention the bum leg.
- Perceval learned the rules of swordsmanship before he had proper hands. His adopted father was a great admirer of the art of fencing and a connoisseur of the blade. In combination with his experience as hired steel, he handles edged weapons almost as well as whisky.
- He can outdrink even the toughest of sailors.
- Mr. Moore knows what he looks like, and uses his startling appearance to his advantage whenever possible. His height, his dark second-hand hands and his piercing, weepy eyes grant him an intimidation bonus.

- Jax and Ibek the leg breakers. They work for Mr. Mojo, a shell trader and Whisp-weed dealer in his close-enough-to-home town of Fishborn. Jax is a cunning dark elf who always knows a guy. He’s done favors for Perceval, and Perceval has done favors for him. They’ve worked, eaten, and fought alongside each other. Jax is the closest thing Perceval has to a best friend. He rooms with Ibek, a gentle half-giant who snaps arms for a living and crotchets in his free time.
- Fritz Gumms the marshal, one of the few staples of law enforcement in the far-west city of Jewelcrest. He gave Perceval a warm meal and a dry cell to sleep in after he caught him stealing from the mayor's office. He’s Percy’s emergency contact.
- Piper (and Marion) the witchy shop keepers. On the outskirts of Hedgborn is a little slum called Sludgeborn, where the servants who don’t reside in the houses of their masters live. Along these strips of housing are carts and booths set up selling everything you could want and plenty you don’t need. In the fabric business is the stitch-witch Piper. She has described herself at various times as both “super fucking chill” and “goth but only for the music and the fashion and the culture and the self loathing.” Her sock puppet Marion keeps her company while she sells camel skins and microfiber underpants.

- Llewelyn Scruffs the bounty hunter. He’s a harengon outlaw that drifted into Jewelcrest around the same time Perceval got arrested. Scruffs bailed him out, but only because there was a much bigger bounty on his head in the next town over. While traveling, they were attacked by raiders. Perceval saved the outlaw’s life, but Scruffs was badly wounded. He agreed to take the cowboy into town, but on the condition that he didn’t turn him in. Llewelyn held up his end of the bargain, but resented Perceval for making him walk the last mile on his own.
- Robin Huperts the tavern keeper. She grew up in an adopted family just like Perceval. During his early adult years, she took pity on him and let him crash in her supply closet. She kicked him out after she caught him stealing beer, but she reads the letters he occasionally sends her way.
- Precious Romwitsy the traveling actress. The Redmoon theater drifts from town to town, finding audiences in everyone from nobility to paramilitary groups to farmers who can barely afford a ticket. The crown jewel of the traveling theater is Precious Romwitsy- a true thespian at heart. She shares Perceval’s periodic problems with alcohol. They’ve swapped plenty of stories, and forgotten just as many at the bottom of a bottle. He repulses her, but her vanity is melted by his witty countenance.

I'm so grateful for this community of like-minded devotees. Because moments ago, I finished my first start to finish listen. I am moved. I am processing and I figured with all of you was the best place to do it.
In preparation, I ate half a gummy, turned on dim lighting, popped in my headphones, and reclined on my office couch.
My Cosmos is Mine started hot, with now familiar notes and bass setting the tone. Reminds me of opening with World in My Eyes.
As soon as Wagging Tongue hit my headphones, I was hooked. It gave me hints of But Not Tonight, oddly, and Policy of Truth, but it was completely fresh and new. I was certain it would be my favorite track. If this isn't a single, I'll be disappointed. I fucking love this track.
Then the now well- played Ghosts Again, which is a solid track that grew on me steadily. It was the only one I skipped. Don't Say You Love Me: those first chords give me a bit of SOFAD guitar, with a hint of Johnny Marr. And the lyrics start, Wow! Dave's wailing, it's Condemnation, but somehow hopeful. The chorus felt reminiscent of One Caress. It's gorgeous. This is the first one that started hitting me emotionally, in a way the last few albums haven't, at least not right away. "The promises left on the sheets." Something is reminding me of MFTM, maybe the way it trails off. Excellent.
My Favorite Stranger: the riff, and the bass, the synth--YES. Damn, it reminded me of the first time I heard Black Celebration, or Useless. And again, those lyrics kept getting at me. Dave's voice echoing in the distance. It's that combo that I know we all love in DM, whatever it is that makes us obsessed. Whatever has made me love them since childhood. It's ominous and uplifting, depressing but beautiful. Then Martin harmonizes, and that's my favorite. And that persistent guitar and whining sound, driving the beat. So good. And those last little sounds, makes me think of their sound experimentation.
Soul with Me: Gods this is Martin's favorite kind of song to sing. I always want him to speed up, a la Route 66, but it's him at his best here. His velvety voice is pure luxury and delight to let pour over you. And that surprising transition, like a different decade butting in. This reminds me of Martin's first solo album, and I recognize he is channeling his early musical influences. Despite the slower tempo, the chorus made me want to sing along.
Caroline's Monkey: I can immediately see why this is many people's favorite. It's catchy as hell. Lyrics are a little obvious at first, giving me Dave's first solo album, actually, but man I like listening to it. Dave's vocal attitude sounds like Marc Almond in Soft Cell. Then the chorus, and it feels less cheeky and now I'm getting all reflective. Other tracks so far have gotten me in the nostalgia but this one is all contemporary to me.
Before We Drown: Unreservedly, my favorite. I so appreciate how I've grown up with DM. As a kid, so much of the messaging was over my head, but I got the gist. As I got older, I found new waits to relate and appreciate my old favorites and find new appreciation with more experience. I've experienced a lot since the last album, and this one surprised me, how much it struck me and made me reflective. I couldn't explain exactly why, but halfway through I started feeling tears in my eyes. This one, is like a dialogue between the teenage self who felt so herself, listening to DM, and who I am today, and how this music, these incredibly talented men, have meant so much to me. And I continue to find new meaning. They continue to make me feel the most like myself.
People are Good: This was a good followup song so i could stop weeping. I believe Martin said he felt like he needed to write something positive and optimistic, but it's a bit tinged with skepticism and despair. There's a good bit of despair coming through Martin's lyrics. The chorus is gorgeous. It's modern but so familiar.
Always You: Godammit why am I crying again? My love. Reminded me of John Lennon's Oh My Love, but better, sadder, and then it's only Dave. I know Martin's my favorite, but my goodness, this is Dave at his best. The high note! The music, though, it's classic DM, it's Black Celebration. It's an unofficial sequel to Somebody, or Lie to Me. Amazing. My second favorite.
Never Let Me Go: Yes, yes, I'm going to dance to this when I see them next week. I can already tell. The synth is early DM, it's Its Called A Heart and Shake the Disease, but again, modern and new, completely. Martin's deep, rich voice grounds it. The riff is pure Useless, incredible. It's catchy, I think it will be stuck in my head.
Speak to Me: And here are the tears again. This one is like reading Dave's diary or listening to his dying prayers. Obviously they are always baring their souls for us to consume, and this one dies that, it takes me back to Walking in my Shoes and Condemnation, the degree to which it's so raw and open. But the melody gives me Sweetest Perfection, One Caress, I Want You Now. Towards the climax, the beat becomes strained, there's a high whining mechanical tone like a defibrillator whirring, a childlike tune plays, and then the beat returns strong, pounding, like a heartbeat.
Overall, this album did exactly what the name says: memento mori. The purpose of reminding one, remember that you will die is not to scare or shock. It's really a reminder to LIVE, to enjoy, to appreciate what we have while we have it. This is the best DM album in a long time because it is one cohesive project. I believe that Dave and Martin's writing have finally blended in a way that is true to the history and spirit of the band. The album as a whole, and the songs individually, strike that perfect balance between despair and hope, light and dark, slow and upbeat. Because it has a cohesive feel, it's easy to get lost in the storytelling and imagery and music. It is, and I do not say this lightly, an instant classic. It is a true Depeche Mode album in all the best ways and will be remembered as one of their best.

Randy Foo fills a pipette with orange juice from a bottle clearly labelled ‘For Bats ONLY’. He and his colleague Rommel Yroy are seated at a biological safety cabinet, wrapped in blue gowns and wearing face shields, gloves, scrub pants and shoe covers. Peeping out of Yroy’s clasped hands are two round, glossy black eyes, two slight, pointy ears and the furry snout of a young, male cave nectar bat (Eonycteris spelaea). It is wriggling and squealing, occasionally protruding its long, pink tongue to lick driblets of the sweet drink. This is a little treat for enduring a transfer in a blue cotton bag from its cage to the laboratory, followed by a quick weigh-in and inspection for injuries along its stretched-out wings and dense, fur coat. “The younger guys are generally a little bit more feisty,” says Foo.
The bat in Yroy’s hand is one of some 140 cave nectar bats housed in a research breeding colony in Singapore — the first in Asia. Foo, who manages the colony and is affiliated with Duke–National University of Singapore (Duke–NUS) Medical School, and Yroy, a veterinary technician at Sing Health Experimental Medicine Centre, have nurtured the bats for years. The original 19 members of the colony were caught using butterfly nets under highways around Singapore in 2015 and 2016; the first pups arrived a couple of years later.
The colony was set up by Lin-fa Wang, a virologist at Duke–NUS Medical School to create a controlled setting for studying bat biology, including the inner workings of their immune system.
For Wang, who has spent decades studying bats and infectious diseases, the colony has been a research boon, allowing him to ask questions about, for example, the cells that make up bat immune systems and how they respond to an infection. Now that the bats are breeding productively, the team’s research can be replicated more easily. They have shared bat tissue with about a dozen teams around the world. “Bats have become a hot topic,” says Wang.

Wang’s research niche has become more crowded since the emergence of SARS-CoV-2. Attendance at talks and conferences about bats is rising — at one symposium hosted last year in the United States, there were 30% more participants compared with the same event organized before the pandemic — and funders are ploughing money into studies of bats and infectious diseases: in 2021, for instance, both China and the United States announced specific funding pots for research into bats and viruses.
Of particular interest is the bat immune system, especially its ability to tolerate viruses that are deadly to people and other mammals — from Ebola to Nipah and severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). Although bat immunity is poorly understood, its consequences are clear: bats are thought to be the source of various catastrophic viral outbreaks in humans.
The field is now at an inflection point, fuelled partly by the pandemic. Researchers who have spent decades studying infections in bats, together with enthusiastic newcomers, are developing and applying new tools to the question of how bats can live with such dangerous pathogens. Some hope that those insights could one day lead to treatments for tackling infections in people and ways to prevent viruses spilling over from bats.
“There are going to be some huge steps forward in the next two or three years in terms of bat virology and bat immunology,” says Tony Schountz, an immunologist at Colorado State University in Fort Collins.
Mangoes and melons
The bats in Wang’s colony are a precious resource, and the researchers treat them accordingly. Over the years, they have tweaked the bats’ diet and environment to keep the animals healthy. The bats enjoy fresh chopped melon, papaya and mango, powdered milk and a sweet-smelling, nectar-like liquid. A burlap sack hangs from the top of each cage to give the bats — who live in groups of about 25 — some privacy and darkness. Foo plans to introduce further enrichments when the colony moves to a facility with larger cages later this year.
“The colony has given us everything we wanted,” says Wang. His office is adorned with souvenirs collected over the years — a ‘batman’ keychain, a bat-printed mug, resin-encased bat specimens, framed drawings of bats.
The researchers have studied the bats’ genomes and the diversity of viruses the animals host. They have also used bats’ cells to develop airway organoids — mini organs grown from stem cells. Their current experiments are focused on the bats’ response to infection, their ageing process and their very active metabolism during flight. The colony is a valuable research resource.

Wow, looking at the title of this post is fucking terrifying. But no one starts a long-term relationship expecting to feel this way. My girlfriend and I met on Facebook Dating, the same as my previous, very short relationship which will have its relevance in this post.
I am 29 and my girlfriend is 22. I’m a metal-head, an aspiring tattoo artist, a horror movie fanatic and a fantasy and science fiction nerd. My girlfriend loves Hello Kitty, the color pink, TikTok, Taylor Swift and Harry Styles. I smoke weed and my girlfriend quit smoking and wishes I didn’t. Besides the truly traumatic fights we’ve had (which because I’m a red-flag artist, they’ve mostly been due to some destructive habitual bad habits and erratic behavior of mine), I don’t think we have anything in common and I don’t think we understand each other.
Besides my girlfriend playing in my Dungeons & Dragons campaign (which was really the only activity we spent hours doing together, sometimes she’ll watch me play video games which is sweet), it’s confirmed that my girlfriend doesn’t like any of music, doesn’t like my artwork outside of appreciating it because I’m her boyfriend (it’s very horror-esque) and has no interest in talking about history, philosophy, science, or really any of my interests at all. I also am getting exhausted of watching Dance Moms and The Office but I don’t know what else we can watch together and enjoy. We also have sex like once a month.
This evening, I showed my girlfriend some album art (Feeding the Wolves, 10 Years) that I really want to get tattooed on my right shoulder and she looked at it blankly and said “I personally don’t like it but I think it’s cool that you do.” It was just a paint and ink drawing of a wolf’s head. I don’t want to paint my girlfriend in a bad light in any way which is what makes this so truly terrifying. She is a huge advocate for mental health and has been a really supportive partner. I just can’t help but think of what would happen if I ran into someone who enjoyed history or science or horror art or even black and white movies because my girlfriend refuses to watch those as well. It’s just hard.
OK, so we don’t enjoy to do the same activities together but there are plenty of couples who don’t share the same interests and have a (successful?) relationship. I don’t know, I don’t think I agree with that and I don’t know if I should or if that standard is republican traditionalist bullshit. A lot of hesitation has come from not knowing if what I want is not OK because of relationship norms. Unfortunately, there’s more issues than just us being people who would never get together if we spent time as friends first. So, here goes.
My girlfriend has severe OCD and will cry if I misplace something or put something in the wrong place or knock something over. I’m a scatterbrained neurodivergent with ADHD and that’s probably not going to change. I think it’s ridiculous and it’s making home life incredibly stressful, not to mention having no privacy because if I don’t go to bed at the same time as her, she has a tantrum. I hate to sound apathetic but I’m almost 30. I don’t want to babysit my girlfriend. I feel like an asshole but I think that’s well in my rights to feel that way. I just have felt like I can’t breathe lately.
So about the previous relationship and how it’s affecting my current one. I dated a Wiccan who listens to Tool and Alternative Rock and Metal. We took walks in the graveyard, we played video games, we played board games, we smoked and talked about philosophy. We fell asleep listening to my favorite band Antimatter… which my girlfriend has flat-out told me she can’t stand. My previous girlfriend was incredibly verbally abusive but I can’t help but think about her all the fucking time. She nourished a part of me that is incredibly suppressed-feeling now.
The absolute worst part is that I moved for her. I first moved into her trailer where all the nightmare fights took place (crying, screaming etc.) and now I’m living in the house she bought. I work and help with fixing the place up and every responsibility a good boyfriend should do but fuck, how do I get out of this if I need to? My friends are an hour and a half from here and I have no one but my girlfriend and her family. I feel incredibly trapped.
And now at the end of this, I’ll share my plan. I have an individual therapist and we also have a couples therapist. I want to ask my therapist for help on how to do it and share how I feel in a place where we both feel safe - couples therapy. I don’t know if I should live here and help her with the house use she doesn’t feel alone or if I should make plans for getting a studio apartment. I still can’t believe I’m even considering these options.
If anyone could provide me with some thoughts or advice or insight, I’d really, really appreciate it.

Azure Infinitum means "Azure/Blue Infinity or Infinite Blue/Azure" and there is some mythos behind the name that stems from our guild-wide philosophy of kindness, freedom, vigilance, diversity and activity. We promote positive fellowship among members in an organized guild, with our sights open to our unending endless skies, full of possibility and success together.
Our motto is "As Free As The Azure Sky!" which stuck well when our FC was restructured from an old guild in 2014 as Azure was founded, and it was first shouted as we looked out at a clear blue sky above. has continued to be our electric victory as we continue to snowball in success and activity, our members soaring high through the Azure Sky, flying together!

Our community has an organized ranking structure beginning with Members who comprise the majority of the roster. Scouts are our support team of Members who've stepped up to more officially support the FC, some work on obtaining a future leadership rank. Lieutenants and Officers comprise the proud Azure Council, a diverse group of players of different specialties and services to the FC, making up lower and higher tier leadership, seeing over the Scouts and the FC weekly events, aside from being admins. The FC Infinitum Master oversees all and leads the Azure Council and the company forward while always keeping the heart and vision of the community alive and in sight. Currently we are re-assessing ranks in the free company, giving more support permissions and duties to our Scouts, while the current council operates as a small team of Lieutenants lead by the FC Master.
Everyone Welcome and Who Fits Best
We have an open door policy. Whether you're casual, a returning player, a veteran, or a newbie, we have a vast array of players in our member roster. Our weekly schedule is organized and provides an array of activity for players of most levels, however we like to ask players who're pretty new or under the level cap, to be extra vocal about their needs while they're still unable to attend some daily events or higher level content that most of our weekly lineup focuses on. We want everyone to have as much fun as possible and have the most success. We find that most players enjoy Azure Infinitum, many have stated that they subscribed to FFXIV much longer than they ever would have imagined after they have been around in our community, as they've gotten involved and experienced all that we offer.
Our FC keeps a daily schedule (see here: https://www.azureinfinitum.com/events/) of events that are hosted by permitted Scouts and Council ranks, these range from 8-man and 24-man raids and map parties, to WT journal groups and trial clear parties or farms, and more- and attending anything isn't mandatory at all here. We're happy to have you, and its up to our members how much they'd like to get involved. Attendance is optional! There's never any stress to attend FC functions.
Savage Raiding Statement
We find that some hardcore raiders looking for free companies just to join their statics who don't already have one, might not fit well if savage raiding is their only or greatest focus, because traditionally Azure does not have a Savage Static, but focuses more on allowing members to organize their own groups and also provides resources to do so. Despite not supporting an official static for the FC, we hope that hardcore raiders enjoy the wealth of our community's wealth of harmony and overall fun, and that everyone may take initiative to seek out or build a raiding static within our community if they are interested, as opposed to missing out on experiencing Azure. Depending on the content season, we may have an Unofficial static lead by a leader, and routinely offer limited time Savage-learning events that may run for a number of months.
Rules and No Drama Policy
Please take a moment to look over our Rules Page at (https://www.azureinfinitum.com/rules/), we find that rude individuals and people who create drama are the outsiders here that don't fit well. We know its a big page, so at least visit the General Rules section before joining.
Recruitment Care & Activity
People of Azure Infinitum are often if not always good natured players who found their way to our community looking for a place with structure, friendliness, organization, and great activity, or they've been scouted during recruitment drives and have been well screened. Its a place where one can be social and attend everything, or relax in the background and enjoy the services and facilities of being in an active, organized, and friendly FC. We actively recruit periodically to assist with upkeep of community activity levels, and to meet new comrades. A community that closes recruitment can be doomed to stagnation. Its normal for a community to have an inner core of die hards who log in daily regardless of content releases, and also have an outer core of individuals that range from those with less availability to those who check in during Patches. This is why we take extra care in keeping the fresh blood flowing into Azure, cautious recruitment, and support our active model by always staying welcoming and sometimes running recruitment campaigns and other services. Handling Online Drama
Because we keep a no-drama policy and have a strong communication network, it is leadership's ultimate priority to handle any issues that may come up as soon as possible, and most people appreciate our problem solving which has inspired many other communities. Between our Support & Leadership ranks, we use a number of report and resource channels to handle situations, and perform problem solving protocols & tactics to fairly address issues as possible. Drama is inevitable at some point for any online community, so its important to have a large and strong list of moderators (currently around 60!) and a council of leaders (15+) to quickly handle any problems. Luckily, we don't have a lot of drama, but we're always very well equipped and very prepared. Our community has been commended by game staff in the past for our methods, and we have worked with the FFXIV Special Task Force to ensure as much safety to our community as achievable. It should be stressed that it is up to our membership to report to GM's in-game, and to Azure Leadership should any issues or concerns come up. Its also highly recommended that our members appropriately document evidence that can be used to help us assess situations and make proper decisions. Documenation such as screenshots of harassment is a great example! Our members online safety is greatly important to us and is a number one concern of our leadership team. Estate Organization
We have the entire set-up at our estate, from gardens for members and Krakka Root production (free for members' chocobos), to our stables, nicely uniform clean lawn with hangout spots that are popular, with crafting stations, all available NPCs for simple mats and repairs, cut-scene viewer, toybox, triple-triad board, a fully operational and geared fleet of airships and subs, and our Azure Infinitum Assembly Chamber on the top floor for our meetings where announcements are made at our Grand Assemblies. We also have an organized form of gathering for weekly events in the yard, places to relax, food that is always available on tables at our Cellar, and hold a lot of special events and social games at our Hall. We're also conveniently located next to a Market Board and a Retainer Bell outside of our estate.

We have multiple services of which none are mandatory, but we provide being (azureinfinitum.com) where our Forums, Event Calendar, News, Company Meeting Summaries, Seasonal Merch Giveaways, Contests, Rules Page, and more take place and can be found. We also have a popular and active Discord Server.

Also worthy of mention is our big Company Meetings in-game, known as Azure Infinitum Grand Assemblies. Even though we have several avenues that keep people connected, our live assemblies gather the FC in unity where announcements are made first, and all proposals, ideas, and more, can be decided together live with the Azure Council present.
This network ensures a lot of information and communication gets around and has been exceedingly useful to us.
More On Events
One part of our reputation that often precedes us is our event crafting and hosting.
First, let me make sure its clear that attendance is never mandatory, but those who can make use, when possible, of what we provide each day, benefit from our events each week.
Since our beginning, traditions like our Thursday Treasure Thursdays events have run each week. Our weekly line-up presently begins on Tuesdays post-weekly reset, and consists of Raid Tuesdays, Wondrous Wednesdays (WT Journal Parties, often doubles as Trial Clears and Pony Drops), Treasure Thursdays (Endwalker's timeworn maps with groups of 8 doing up to 3 rounds of maps allowing for up to 24 maps ran), 24-Man Tuesdays (full pre-formed Azure 24-member alliances are made and raids are cleared, will be returning upon the release of EW's 24-man), Super Azure Slayer Sunday (our weekly meetup to do all sorts of PVP content be it Rival Wings or Frontline), and Monstrous Mondays (helps clear the current and previous patch extreme trials).

We also have what we call Special and Quarterly Events. These types of events are Weekend-Long-Events that usually consist of a theme or celebratory social events we craft. During these events we hold big Riddle Races, Costume/Glamour shows and contests, 3-Story Mansion Maze Races, Speedrun Dungeon Races, Hide and Seek games, Custom Quest Events, Discord events like Cards Against Humanity nights, Comedy events, PVP Tournament Circuits, and more.
Our Special and Quarterly events are Azure Day Weekend (Takes place 3 times a year across a weekend, celebrates the FC), Azure Summer Festival (3-days at the end of August in partnership with Child's Play, raises money for children in long-term care, anniversary of historic FC event called the Lunar Rebellion), Anniversary Azure Day (a big weekend event in November that celebrates our Founding), Azure Day Saint's Wake (celebrates Halloween/All Saint's Wake), Azure Starlight Day (celebrating Starlight Day/Christmas/December Holiday Season), Azure Grand Melee and Duel Tournaments (PVP Circuit series crowning our PVP Champions) and more.
Azure Day Weekends
If you've been around our server you may have heard of our Azure Day Weekends. Our Azure Days take place quarterly as mentioned just above, with four evolved editions called Azure Summer Festival, Azure Day Saint's Wake, Azure Starlight Day, and Anniversary Azure Day. With Azure Day Weekends and related events traditionally occuring quarterly our members are always excited to see the next big weekend of crazy and fun social games, and our showering of the free company in gil and prizes galore. We go all out when we celebrate the free company, and Azure Days are another way we find for leadership to give back to the community. 2023 and beyond is now host to additional seasonal Azure Day events!
We're always giving our members a chance to have fun, win big, and make some great memories in the in-game family we've become. Something fun is always on the horizon in Azure.
Community
I almost can't stress enough how friendly our community is. We have a vast variety of members from hardcore gatherers and crafters, social butterflies, chill veterans, experienced raiders, level grinders, support teams, PVP aficionados, mechanic specialists, and mentors. We're also very friendly to all casual players as well and we keep an open door so long as recruits are always aware that we have a no-drama tolerance here.
​Evolution into a Gaming Clan & Network
Plans are in the works and foundations are being laid that is slowly turning our community into a larger gaming network, with our first established Azure Wing with regular occurring activity being founded in Monster Hunter World, this has led to a successful Destiny 2 clan and more. Becoming a member of our Discord and/or Free Company now means access to things like our huge discord, Azure Wing membership in other games, and being able to join in on any of our other activities in the general community. Azure Network as its being called at the moment, is growing with an all-new website and community features for playing together across Final Fantasy XIV and to Azure Skies beyond!
Activity
We rank high as one of the top FC's in Worldwide Activity on lodestone, and have for a long time. Most of our players are divided between the US East and West Coasts, members in East and West Canada, and a few outside the US or in EU or Aus zones. Because we do have an activity policy (mentioned below) we keep a standard flow of people, and have crowds in the early morning, late morning, early afternoon, afternoon, evening, and late night crowds.
Elitism isn't our style. Our community boasts a broad range of characters, great personalities, the proud, and also some silly goofs. But elitism isn't welcome, no matter how successful we are or how large we grow. We're always welcoming towards fresh faces interested in joining our guild, and the in-game activity ranges between 30-60+ online at once during prime time hours, sometimes around 70+ on patch days, and usually always with half the roster logging in throughout a 24 hour period, and around 15-30+ during the night.
Activity Policy
We ask that our members do not go missing without logging in for more than 60 days straight. If we hear word from someone or have some kind of decent excuse, we place our members on our On Vacation rank, which lasts presently until 90 days have passed. Exceptions are made for military deployments, hospital stays, financial issues, disability/health related issues, moving, or other reasons that might fall on a case-by-case basis.
All members not heard from in 60 days (roughly 2 months) or currently 90 days (roughly 3 months) are discharged. We allow 3 joins to Azure Infinitum in total, but exceptions can be made due to reasons listed above. If removed for inactivity, or you've left our FC for another reason and haven't already joined 3 times, you're always welcome back, but please remember, we are not a revolving door.
Keeping our roster full of members who have been online and presently play the game actively ensures an active environment for our players who play often. It also keeps our credits and clerical processes balanced across our network, and allows space for new faces to join our big happy in-game family of comrades.

-tries to not panic- tl;dr Did not ask to be a homeowner, didn't ask for any of my disabilities either, yet here I am. If you don't live in a corrupt "small city" (less than 5k residents) this might not make sense to you. I also have C-PTSD, so my need to feel safe is like a priority. Having an Officer lack the intelligence to understand that just because a neighbor cried to you on the phone that "cameras are scary" does not mean her cry session turns into a law... Tell everyone else to take their cameras down. This not so intelligent Officer is willing to turn a civil complaint into a criminal one, all because he "hates coming down here". And of course, the day of my psych appointment, the poor woman is sick :( I was soooooo looking forward to her advice. Yes, autistic/adhd folks can say big words too, maybe not correctly but we can spell it! I contacted thirty-nine lawyers, none are interested in pursuing, so I might just go Pro Se in small claims court. I did report the police to the US DOJ Civil Rights division. Wrote a new template, this time they'll want to embark on this journey with me? lol

My primary care physician has corroborated my struggle with Complex-PTSD, anxiety, ADHD, arachnoiditis, scoliosis, kyphosis, and limb length irregularities, which inflict agonizing pain in my hips. An advanced functional MRI has disclosed that my bones belie an age nine years advanced beyond my chronological age. Furthermore, I am assailed by a life-threatening Vitamin D deficiency, with my blood containing a paltry 5.6ug of Vitamin D, a stark contrast to the 30ug typically found in healthy males. I'm so tired, I haven't been able to sleep for days because I'm scared they could show up at any time. My resting heart rate has been over 120 beats per minute for the last week, blood pressure is nuts, 155/110. My alprazolam, diazepam, clonazepam nor my Seroquel are equipped to handle this nonsense. Sadly, psych says I'm at the max for benzos, lame. 60mg diazepam for stress is like pointless. Sadly, our state doesn't understand the difference between addiction and physical dependency due to your disability. Asked for something to just knock me out for a while, and I got a "Hope you get through this." reply instead of a prescription #lovely lol. Okay, I'll shut up now, no one will probably read this anyways lol.

2023.03.24 06:18 OddMemory2244 The Crimson Court made me abandon Darkest Dungeon

I had 25 hours in game, I had just upgraded the smithy and guild to max, I was just starting to have a couple decent teams at lvl 6, and since I looooved this game so much, I went back and purchased all the DLC without looking at reviews, and I installed all of them. I went in blind, not knowing what to expect from the Crimson court. Oh, an invitation? A new area? Neato! And so I went.
A few hours later, I am closing Darkest Dungeon and never opening it again. The Crimson court ruins the whole game, because it takes over and cancels the normal gameplay loop, replacing it with something so, so, so much worse. The crimson curse is the single worst gameplay mechanic they could have added to this game. Not only that, but the fact that Crimson court NPCs randomly roam the corridors of the actual castle, now, means that I can't even have a team of "crimson cursed" champions to handle the DLC, knowing they'll die and it's ok. EVERY champion is getting the curse in normal missions. After just a handful of weeks doing excursions in the normal areas, due to the roaming bloodsucker monsters, virtually my whole roster has the curse, and the blood is exceedingly rare. Champions need blood far, far more often than blood is found. I cannot even go to the Crimson court itself to farm blood BECAUSE I NEED A FKOJEFWEIMKJLING INVITATION AND RNG IS DENYING IT TO ME.
So, I cannot send my lvl 6 champions on regular missions - therefore, it becomes impossible to kill bosses. I am loath to send lvl 4-5 champions either, given that they also all get the curse and just constantly die. The building that gives 2 bloods per week is not even enough to keep my currently-cursed champions from dying, and every healthy champion sent on an expedition is 100% guaranteed to be infected by the curse, but sending a party of infected is suicide because all 4 then require blood WHICH I DON'T HAVE. The only gameplay loop that allows any kind of progress now is to let the cursed champions die until there's just enough of them to be sustained by the 2 weekly vials, then just recruit cannon fodder from the coach and send them on a single mission, where they inevitably get infected, and then dismiss all four, only to restart with 4 new recruits. It does not allow leveling up, it does not allow game-after-game progress, it does not allow to have any lvl 6 champion, it does not allow to beat bosses, it does not allow to tackle the Darkest Dungeon. In one word, it is garbage.
The game is not playable at all, with the Crimson court active. Literally, absolutely, objectively unplayable.
There were ways to make this work. I'd really like an option to toggle off the fking court and be able to return to my game. There's also the option of locking the Crimson court to be only accessible for people who finished the game and are looking for an extra hard challenge that will change the gameplay loop of THE ENTIRE GAME, for instance, if they wanted to really make the Crimson court invade the entire game and upend the normal game experience. But I argue that it could have been fine if they kept everything the same but if the curse was kept inside the court, removing all roaming bloodsuckers, so players could choose to sacrifice chosen champions to the curse to advance the DLC. It could even have been good! But the fact that every champion going to any mission is quasi guaranteed to get the curse, the fact it becomes impossible to do normal missions AT ALL while the court is active, is the worst decision I have ever seen a game dev make.
The ONLY way to advance, now, would be to sacrifice all of my hard-grown champions by throwing them at a wall, letting every lvl 5-6 die until I get another invitation, advance the DLC, then restart - throw my champions at the wall to die of the curse in the hope of a single invitation, then advance the DLC a bit more, etc. I looked up how long it is - if it continues to take multiple hours for one single invitation to drop by chance, it would easily take me 15, 20, maybe up to 30 hours of grueling, unfun gameplay just to end the DLC and FINALLY being able to play the game itself.
My only option is to tolerate the grueling DLC that cancels the entire normal game (I'm not doing that) or delete my save and start over from 0 without the DLC (I wasted 25 hours on my save before the DLC bricked it, I'm not doing that again). So, last option: Uninstall Darkest Dungeon and forever remember it as this amazing game that is rendered entirely unplayable by its VERY poorly thought out DLC.
