Things I’ve noticed at SFU as a Douglas transfer
2023.06.06 19:11 CrushedOats Things I’ve noticed at SFU as a Douglas transfer
Hi! I did 6 semesters at Douglas for an associates of science degree before transferring to SFU to complete a BSC of environment. As I work through my first semester here at SFU I thought I’d share some of the differences I’ve noticed between the two schools! Please feel free to add any advice or questions!
The campus is large but you still only get 10 minutes between classes (which isn’t enough depending on where you need to go.) Surprisingly, it’s a lot less stairs though! There’s an app that you can download to show you where your classes are on a map.
Classes are normally 50 minutes and 3x a week, and not the 1:50 2x like they are at Douglas. Kinda nice but also frustrating because the time goes by so quickly! It also means there’s less time for questions, and there’s no breaks in classes.
Classes are much larger than at Douglas. Say goodbye to your prof knowing your name. You’ll have a lot more contact with TA’s in both lecture and tutorial. If you have questions about the content of the class, you’re better off talking to a TA than the prof. They’ll reply faster.
Shorter classes means that lecture often consists of the prof going over example problems, and having you study the lecture content on your own. I’ve noticed this for classes like Calc, Chem, and Physics.
They use Canvas instead of blackboard. It’s nicer than blackboard but lots of information can get lost between the multiple menus and modules. Teachers also require online materials a lot more than Douglas, and sometimes more than one paid subscription is required for each class. You can still find lots of textbooks online though!
Almost all my classes use iclicker. It’s like kahoot but less fun and used for impromptu quizzes or in class polls. I don’t believe you have to pay to use it. You also don’t need to buy the physical remote for it. It does mean that you’ll need a phone or laptop with reliable internet for your class. Assignments are also submitted through crowdmark.
There’s many options for seating on campus but honestly lots of the places to sit are uncomfortable. Somehow most of the tables are too far away from the chairs or benches so you can’t comfortably sit and write.
Desks in classes are often lecture style seating with the half size folding desks. Chairs on the edge of the aisle should have a left handed table. You can fit either a notebook or a computer on it and not much else. There’s not a lot of outlets in the theatre lecture halls, so charge your computer before class.
The Tim Hortons on campus kinda sucks compared to the one at Douglas. There is a dining hall that for $15-20~ you can get all you can eat. The food itself is good quality, but the flavors are kinda bland and lacking.
The student store on campus is a lot more expensive than at Douglas. But there’s a wider variety of merch & high end supplies.
The dr’s clinic is so nice to have on campus. You can walk in to schedule an appointment and you’ll usually be seen the same week! They also have a psychologist on staff who is really nice. Visits are covered by MSP. You do need to be a student though.
Cell service sucks, so beware.
There’s pianos everywhere on campus. Think you found somewhere good to study? Nope! Someone is gonna play “Still D.R.E” for an hour straight. Once they finally leave someone else will take their place and play Fur Elise! Avoid the pianos. Don’t be a dick and play longer than 5 minutes tops. Please
The Gosfu system is different from MyAccount. You also have to manually check that classes meet your degree requirements when planning your schedule. I miss MyPath 🥲. Advisors are helpful in telling you what semester a class will be offered.
The SFU discord is the best place to find group chats for classes. Almost every single course has a dedicated discord. Super helpful! If you don’t have a discord, get one.
Exams are often worth +50% of your final grade. They also often are done out of the normal class time. Final exams can also occur on the weekends

2023.06.06 19:06 Wise_Function8779 [Review] 30 or so fragrances reviews, for the archives! Some clones, some designer, some niche, cheapies, high end, low end.
Let's just jump right into it! Hopefully this helps some blind buying souls such as myself. Here are some reviews:
Afnan 9PM - JPG Ultra Male: Picked up a bottle at Amazon for $35USD at the suggestion of one of the users in one of my previous threads. Typical paper cardboard housing with Afnan branding. But we're here for the juice anyways. Basic design but... premium feeling. Nice weight, the atomizer cap is also premium. Good strong spray that outputs a cloud of mist, very good atomizer. First spray you're hit with a citrus and lavender scent, fairly fruity, but this almost immediately leaves and is replaced by a very warm scent which I would describe as a spicy amber. This sticks around but only as an undertone to the extreme vanilla. It's not overpowering, but it's identifiable. Very nice. The first time I sprayed it, I immediately identified the JPG heritage in it, I have owned Le Male and that vanilla is identifiable anywhere. Highly recommend. 8/10. Would I wear it again: Yes Would I want to smell it on someone else: Yes Would I buy the full bottle: Have it
Ana Abiyedh Rouge - Baccarat Rouge 540: If this is an accurate BR540 clone, I can confidently say the scent is very mid. Leans heavily on wood and amber, gives CK Obsession vibes oddly. I wear this because others are in love with it. Have gotten raving compliments. But I also rarely wear it alone, layering it with CDNIM. Great performance, lasting many hours projecting, and when it becomes a skin scent it's there until you wash your clothes I swear. Edit: I got a BR540 authentic decant, it's VERY similar. Like REALLY similar. The price difference on the two is nuts. 6/10. Would I wear it again: Reluctantly Would I want to smell it on someone else: Not really Would I buy the full bottle: Have it
Armaf Odyssey Homme - Dior Homme Intense/Valentino Uomo Intense: Almost tobacco spicy like smell on first spray, then settles into a vanilla amber. Lots and lots of amber and vanilla with this one. Good winter fragrance. Affordable price. Average projection and performance of 4-5 hours max. Not really for me honestly, it doesn't stand out. 6/10. Would I wear it again: Meh Would I want to smell it on someone else: Not really Would I buy the full bottle: Have it
Belcam Shades of Blue - D&G Light Blue: A fantastic fresh fragrance, and for the price it's amazing. Definitely the best smelling Belcam cologne yet in my opinion - other than the shit performance. It's so bad guys. Spray and it's become a skin scent within 20 minutes max. Over spray like crazy for a slight chance at this sticking around. Fantastic as just a pillow spray/room scenter imo. 6.5/10, major dings for performance. Would I wear it again: Yes Would I want to smell it on someone else: Yes Would I buy the full bottle: Have it
Belcam Geau Black - ADG Profumo: Has a pepper musk added to the original Acqua Di Gio scent, and I'm not sure I like it. Mid performance, lasting perhaps an hour. Great price as always from Belcam. 5/10. Would I wear it again: Eh Would I want to smell it on someone else: Meh Would I buy the full bottle: Have it
Belcam Geau Original - ADG: When I picked this one up I had a bottle of the original ADG on hand, and upon spraying both on both arms, I found Belcams perfume actually lasted longer than the OG. It is more linear than ADG, but after letting my dad (who's worn ADG for years) try to distinguish between the two after the dry down, he picked Belcams perfume as his choice for which more accurately represented what he thinks of when he sprays ADG! Very intriguing. Good price as always! 7.5/10. Would I wear it again: Yes Would I want to smell it on someone else: Yes Would I buy the full bottle: Have it
Belcam Classic Match - Drakkar Noir: This is obviously intended to be a clone of Drakkar Noir. I have a bottle on hand, so I was able to compare the two. Personally I find the original Drakkar to be midtier at best in terms of performance and general smell, but I digress. Spraying both on me, the initial scent and the dry down both had Classic Match as a dead ringer for Drakkar! There was a bit of a pine undertone that perhaps was not quite right, but very easy to miss. Oddly, when I let my brother and father try out distinguishing the two in the initial spray, they both disagreed with me that one smelled vastly different from the other. It's possible their sniffers were off as we had been at new perfume testing for a while by that point. I have to disagree with them, it's a really good clone. 7/10. Would I wear it again: Yes Would I want to smell it on someone else: Yes Would I buy the full bottle: Have it
Belcam Geau Blue - ADG Profondo: This one from Belcam takes all the notes of ADG that we love and gives it a...well...blue smell! It smells fresher, more vibrant than the original ADG. I have gotten many compliments on this one. Again though, it doesn't last for too long. Maybe an hour to an hour and a half max. Great price! A strong clone of ADG Profondo. 8/10. Would I wear it again: Yes Would I want to smell it on someone else: Yes Would I buy the full bottle: Have it
Belcam Volatile - Viktor and Rolf Spicebomb: This thing succeeds in being a spicebomb-esque clone. It is incredibly spicy, and called volatile for a reason. That being said, it's a lovely fragrance, for a super affordable price, you can't go wrong with this one. Lasting an hour or so before becoming skin scent, it's one of my favorites from this house. 7.5/10. Would I wear it again: Yes Would I want to smell it on someone else: Yes Would I buy the full bottle: Have it
Club de Nuit Sillage - Creed Silver Mountain Water: So intriguing. I've never seen someone capture the smells of both metallic twang and freshwater nature green in the same scent. A good price, from a good house, and well worth a try. 7.5/10. Would I wear it again: Yes Would I want to smell it on someone else: Yes Would I buy the full bottle: Have it
Creed Virgin Island water: Opens very tropical, lemony with a coconut oil background, it's not as straight coconut as I expected, and has a much appreciated twist of citrus. It quickly dies down into a lemony coconut. I can still faintly smell this on myself as a skin scent like 12 hours later. Not bad. Pretty good as a summer fragrance. Gives me "out of the shower" lotion vibes. 7/10. Would I wear it again: Yes Would I want to smell it on someone else: Yes Would I buy the full bottle: Time will tell...
Dolce and Gabbana Light Blue: Didn't realize the original light blue wasn't unisex lol so I ended up trying the women's version. It opens with a ton of citrus, lemon, and then it gave me lemondrops, it kind of got more candy like. After a few minutes on it's settled into a solid lemon citrus where I expect it to remain. 6/10 Would I wear it again: No Would I want to smell it on someone else: Yes Would I buy the full bottle: Not for me. Too linear and citrus sweet.
English Laundry's Tahitian Waters: Picked this up for $4 at Marshall's on discount, an absolute steal I could not pass up. It has a bottle that captivates me for some reason, chrome at some angles, nearly see through at others. It has a faint alcohol smell to it, but it's not a big deal. I definitely get citrus, and some have described the dry down as musk with baked cookies. Overall very tropical, and super refreshing! It's downfall is weak performance, gone within the hour almost. Fairly strong sillage, many people being able to smell it on me after application from a few feet away! Likeable, and a nice summer frag. 7.5/10. Would I wear it again: Yes Would I want to smell it on someone else: Yes Would I buy the full bottle: Have it! If you can get it on the cheap, it's a nice addition to any lineup.
Guerlain Angelique Noir: On first spray you're hit with the most pleasant authentic vanilla bean you've ever smelled. There's a bit of a woody musk background, but this leaves in around an hour for me where only pure sweet vanilla remains. It's a very premium, rich, seductive scent of intense vanilla. 7.5/10 Would I wear it again: Yes Would I want to smell it on someone else: Yes Would I buy the full bottle: No. It's way overpriced for what it is. It's good, but not THAT good. I don't think I'll look beyond my little sample for this one.
Hermes H24: A very woody/green fragrance, it's herbal at it's...almost finest? It smells like boiled peanuts up close to me, not in a bad way necessarily, but also not in a good way. This may be due to the floral notes similar to that of peanut oil or something. Either way, it's a decent pick for the price, projection is just ok, lasted on me for 4 hours before becoming skin scent.... nothing too special, but it smells different which is always nice. Just didn't wow me. 6.5/10. Would I wear it again: Eh. Yeah I guess. Would I want to smell it on someone else: Not really, it's not bad I just wouldn't seek it out. Would I buy the full bottle: Probably not. It's just not for me.
Kilian Angel's Share: I'm in love. This is what love is. I thought I loved cooking. I thought I loved puppies. I thought I loved my parents. No. I love Kilian Angel's Share. This is my top fall fragrance, #1 for clubbing, #1 for evocativeness, #1 for NOSTALGIA. This has personal meaning for me, but when I was younger, sometimes my parents would make desserts for us, and one of my favorites was apple pie. They made it with cinnamon and the most delicious syrupy sweet apples and perfectly crisp crust. This fragrance takes me back to those times. Some insist there is no apple note and that what I'm smelling is just the cinnamon, perhaps this is true, but I die on the hill that this fragrance smells exactly like vanilla, cognac, and homemade cinnamon apple pie :) Its expensive, but in my opinion, you can't put a price on memories and emotions, and that's what this fragrance brings to me. I recently got a good deal on a full bottle, thank you to the user that helped me go back to when I was 8 years old with just a single spray. 9/10, price is a hold up if you're looking at retail. Would I wear it again: Always Would I want to smell it on someone else: I would pass away or propose on the spot Would I buy the full bottle: Never discontinue this Kilian.
Lattafa Asad - Dior Sauvage Elixir: I hate the original sauvage. It offends my nose in so many ways, and I'm not a fan. This however, as a clone of elixir, with it's stronger emphasis on spice and "christmastime" succeeds in taking the little that is good from the original Sauvage and makes it delicious. A very good winter fragrance, at a very good price, with decent performance of 3-4 hours. 8/10. Would I wear it again: Yes Would I want to smell it on someone else: Yes Would I buy the full bottle: Have it
Lattafa Fakhar - YSL Y: I've never owned YSL Y, so I can't vouch for it's accuracy, but I love this one so much. It's such a good fresh scent to spray on, I've gotten many compliments on it, it's price is great, it has good projection, pretty sweet though so if that's not your thing...The performance is nothing to write home about, lasting 3.5 hours max. Blind buy safe for sure. Edit: Everyone claims this is a YSL Y clone, but I got a sample of Valentino Uomo Born in Roma and the two smell very similar. Please let me know if anyone else has experienced this. 7/10. Would I wear it again: Yes Would I want to smell it on someone else: Yes Would I buy the full bottle: Have it
Lattafa Khamrah - Kilian Angels Share: My first boozy cologne, and a blind buy, I was a little worried. I've heard this takes ideas from Angel's Share but perhaps leans towards its own scent profile. Either way, I like Khamrah. It gives a lot of clubbing vibes, and it is a very thick scent, so I'm careful how I spray this one. Great performance, average pricing, interesting packaging. A good cologne to round out your scent profiles in your collection if you are yet to partake in a boozy one. Very sweet. Fragrantica describes it's notes as boozy/balsamic, and I agree. Edit: Got an Angel's Share sample, the two are not particularly alike. The boozy apple smell is very prominent in Angels Share, and I almost smell alcoholic apple pie. I prefer Angels Share in terms of just scent profile. 7/10. Would I wear it again: Yes Would I want to smell it on someone else: Yes Would I buy the full bottle: Have it
Maison Alhambra Bright Peach - TF Bitter Peach: Assaults my nose. I used to hate this fragrance, after using it a couple times, I now just dislike it. Both parents and siblings disliked. Woman friend disliked. It's just too sickly thick in my opinion. Maybe I need more time. 4/10. Edit, I've now worn it a few more times, it's been a week, and I even voluntarily reached for it today. I still found it very cloying, but after about an hour it calmed down and even netted a compliment from a friend! 6/10. Second edit: I got an authentic sample of Bitter peach, the two are close (maybe 80% similar) but the Alhambra is much less light and much more cloying 6.5/10. Would I wear it again: It keeps getting better so yes. Would I want to smell it on someone else: Yes Would I buy the full bottle: Have it
Maison Alhambra Kismet Angel: Starts off like 85% angels share, it lacks the boozy note that fills the air on first spray. However in the dry down it becomes more like 93% similarities, as the cinnamon intensifies just like AS. Projection is good, about equivalent performance with Angels Share. An hour later I'm amending that, worse performance than AS, it's not quite as potent. Can definitely over spray a bit on this one, I went for three sprays, two wrist one neck. For its lifetime on me it remained as an "Almost Angel's Share". I would buy this. 8.5/10 Would I wear it again: Yes Would I want to smell it on someone else: Yes Would I buy the full bottle: Yes
Maison Alhambra Rose Petals - TF Rose Prick: Bought this for mother. It's definitely rose, and definitely floral. It has powdery notes, and does have some amber going on. I think it's a good scent, just not for either of us when we tried it on. Would like it on an SO. 6/10, pretty linear. Would I wear it again: No Would I want to smell it on someone else: Yes Would I buy the full bottle: Have it
Maison Alhambra Toscano Leather - TF Tuscan Leather: Disclosure I've never smelled the original. This is probably the most I've seen people split on a fragrance. Every guy I've spoken to loves this, it feels very masculine with notes of leather, oil, and tobacco/cigarettes. Every woman I've spoken to hated it. I'm big on this one, I love the smell of leather and this captures it perfectly. Performance is pretty good, lasting about 4-5 hours before fading to a lasting skin scent. 7.5/10. Would I wear it again: Yes Would I want to smell it on someone else: Yes Would I buy the full bottle: Have it
Maison Margiela Replica Coffee Break: I've so far owned two official samples and one traveler of this stuff, and it's one of my favorites from the Replica series. It has a vanilla latte thing going on. Definitely coffee in the opener, and becomes that vanilla latte maybe 50 minutes to an hour after the initial spray on. Very strong performer! 6 hours later I can still smell it easily as a skin scent, for around 3 hours I could easily smell it in the air around me. Garnered two compliments in the same day, truly a lovely scent. Fall leaning I would say, it's fairly sweet. 7.8/10. Would I wear it again: Yes Would I want to smell it on someone else: Yes Would I buy the full bottle: Yes...once I work my way through all that I have currently I probably will.
Maison Margiela Replica Matcha Meditation: Opening thoughts - This fragrance makes me feel something. It's not the best smelling ever, but man I feel good wearing it. It's floral, I get green tea, matcha, and mochi with chocolate or vanilla ice cream. It feels light to me, and airy upon first spray. I don't anticipate this as a scent that will garner lots of compliments, but I am happy wearing this. 30 minutes later thoughts - Scent has calmed down a bit, for a moment it was fairly strong, now it is much more linear, I'm getting mainly vanilla, with some very green herbal background. 1-2 hours - scent has begun fading to a skin scent, still vanilla and herbal. 7/10. Would I wear it again: Yes Would I want to smell it on someone else: Yes Would I buy the full bottle: Maybe
Memo French Leather: Opens floral with a very subtle leather undertone. Immediately in the dry down I begin to get more of a premium leather smell. Leather and rose, but the rose is more dominant and primary than the leather in this one. Matures nicely, and last around 8 hours on me. 7.5/10. Would I wear it again: Yes Would I want to smell it on someone else: Yes Would I buy the full bottle: Maybe
Nautica Voyage: No perfume has ever given me such instant gratification in the summertime as Voyage. It beats ADG Original and Profondo/Profumo soundly in my opinion. I get tons of melon in the opening, and it remains fairly linear. For a reliable, dependable, affordable (very) fragrance, this is a winner in my book, I've even used it as a pillow spray. It lasted a few hours before I had to reapply, but again it's so cheap it's no big deal. I get compliments every time I wear it. It's very versatile and my favorite application time is right out of a hot shower. 9/10. Best time to wear: Spring/Summer Would I wear it again: Yes Would I want to smell it on someone else: Yes Would I buy the full bottle: Already did. Yes. All day long.
PDM Layton: Feels like a cross between 85% JPG and 15% Spicebomb. Is a very nice warm vanilla with some woody spice going on in the background. I didn't feel it was worth the hype, but I wore it during the summer, so wintertime I may feel different. Had pretty good performance! I could smell it on me easily for a couple hours after I had applied just in the air, it only lasted about 5 hours before fading to a skin scent for me with around 3.5 sprays. 7/10, because it didn't stand out to me for the pricetag it's associated with. Would I wear it again: Yes Would I want to smell it on someone else: Yes Would I buy the full bottle: Probably not. There's no shortage of good winter frags out there, I just don't think I would reach for this enough for the money.
Tom Ford Lost Cherry: Boozy cherries with...almond I think? Feels more feminine leaning, but also I don't care because this one ranks high for me on my list. It smells VERY intoxicating, and the cherry is unique, with the booziness adding a hint of seductiveness. Fairly linear scent that lasted maybe a few hours on me, nothing special there, but the notes are to die for. A very good one for layering as well! I'm a fan of this one from Mr. Ford, with points off for performance and price point issues - 8/10. Would I wear it again: Yes Would I want to smell it on someone else: Yes Would I buy the full bottle: If my wallet permits, at least a partial.
Tom Ford Soleil Neige: Makes me feel warm and fresh. A little powder, a little floral. Dry down gives me tons of floral vanilla. Unisex but in my opinion leans more feminine. Has netted a few compliments. 8/10 Best time to wear: Spring/Summer Would I wear it again: Yes Would I want to smell it on someone else: Yes Would I buy the full bottle: Maybe
Qaed Al Fursan: Pineapple for sure, smells very appealing, synthetic and powdery when smelled very close for first few seconds after spray. Does not last long at all. Maybe like an hour max. Over spray for sure. Magnetic cap is a nice touch! Price is competitive to say the least. A very nice mixer to CDNIM EDP. 6/10. Update: I am bumping the rating of this cologne to 7. After letting it macerate, the performance improved about an hour, the scent became less synthetic in the dry down, and the powdery bit was less pronounced. People in my family have RAVED about the smell of this one. I went into this thinking it was somehow an Aventus clone or something, and I wasn't letting it just be its own thing. As a fruity pineapple that I find to be absolutely seductive, I can't recommend this one enough. However, it's scent profile is very linear, so keep that in mind, but you can always be confident in how consistent it is. 8/10. Would I wear it again: Yes Would I want to smell it on someone else: Yes Would I buy the full bottle: Have it

2023.06.06 18:57 NotARedditUserrr Displate not taking my money for Club Membership. Why?
I must preface this by saying: I have no complaints about the quality of the Displates I have gotten, they're excellent; great quality, look amazing, I love them.
Situation: In the past 20 days Displate seems unable to accept money on both occasions of attempted payments for Club membership. In case you don't know: They only attempt transactions twice after it fails, in 10 day intervals up to 20 days upon failure, if it fails you're back to square one with the whole process. I think of this to be inefficient since every other subscription based service will try frequently to get their payment, no need to wait an extraordinary amount of time to have it dealt with, or leaving a small window of opportunity to just hope things go right. I've updated the methods since then and there's nothing wrong with them. But despite my efforts, still the issue persists, what's wrong? I've contacted them again, and is awaiting a reply. Has anyone experience anything similar? If so how did you get it resolved? Sorry this was long, appreciate any help, I have a lot going on with my life and this is stressing me out.

2023.06.06 18:49 TheCuriousOne347 Rant about therapy
AAAAAAHHHH WHY DO SOME SO CALLED “PROFESSIONALS” THINK IT’S OKAY TO ACT LIKE A JERK TO SOMEONE WHO IS SEEKING HELP!!
I (26F) have to vent this somewhere and I really like this sub. So thank you in advance to anyone who would like to hear me spew my thoughts.
I’ve been in a burnout since the beginning of November. I’ve known all my life that I have ADHD but since December I realised I might be autistic as well. Actually I am 99% sure. The remaining 1% solely relies on the validation of a professional.
My doctor is really helpful and gives me follow up appointments every 2 weeks. She recommended I’d look into relaxation therapy and recommended me a psychologist as well.
I went to the psychologist maybe 10 times over the course of 3 months.
I had told her I have ADHD and that it’s exhausting, especially now that I had hit burnout. I explained to her why and how. She told me to use planners to do my chores and learn how to manage my time and energy by ignoring hyperfocus and essentially “cure” my time blindness.. I already wasn’t a fan of how she wanted to work with me but I thought ‘hey, at least I have someone to talk to’.
Then I told her when I had done extensive research and online tests and that I thought I might have autism also. She told me she had written that down with a question mark the second time we saw each other. But when I got serious about it she didn’t really want to talk about it and made it seem like she didn’t agree? And then told me she doesn’t think in diagnosis and just helps people in her own way. That she thinks we have to go down the path she lays down for everyone. But then saying ‘I have two patients who are autistic and I know how to properly communicate with them and it seems to work. I have to treat one differently than the other one.’ She contradicted herself constantly.
When I brought up the possibility of also having CPTSD, she asked me ‘what trauma have you endured that you think gave you that?’. I thought wow that’s a weird question, shouldn’t she ask me what ‘symptoms’ I have that make me think I might have CPTSD rather than bringing up trauma directly? Well, I told her a FEW things (because ADHD makes me so good in remembering what I wanted to say when on the spot) and she told me ‘I don’t think it’s possible for you to have CPTSD. People we normally see with CPTSD have been physically abused for a long period of time. Yours doesn’t sound that bad. I mean, I don’t want to say what you went through wasn’t hard or difficult, I’m just saying I think it doesn’t qualify for CPTSD.’ That is literally what she said to me…
Last time I went, she would not take me seriously and kept interrupting me, although I was just trying to answer a question she had asked. The interrupting and not letting me finish what I was saying is something she did regularly. Made me feel like she wasn’t interested or even listening. I also told her I had made a google doc listing all the things why I think I have CPTSD and autism. Saying I worked on it for hours and it was almost 20 pages long. She showed no interest. I couldn’t even be honest with her anymore and was agreeing with everything she said. I only realised this when I was outside, trying to figure out why I felt so upset. So I called my mother in tears saying I never want to go back there again. So I didn’t.
I discussed everything with my doctor and she thought it would be a good idea to try adhd medication to help with my burnout. I thought so too, because my brain is driving me craaazyyyy. So I made an appointment with a psychiatrist in the local hospital.
Fast forward to today. Finally the day of said appointment. I woke up exhausted. I’ve been recovering all week, because I went out 1 day to go get some clothes for the summer as I no longer fit in ANYTHING I have and I wanted everything to be sensory friendly. I have gained some weight from being a couch potato for months trying to rest.
My ADHD was screaming at me to postpone the appointment and just deal with it another day. I decided that wasn’t a good idea since I already had to wait months to get this appointment.
Been stressing all day, stimming more than usual, not being able to eat because of waitingmode, not being able to mentally prepare because of the exhaustion. I asked my boyfriend to take me because I didn’t feel safe driving my scooter due to exhaustion and dissociation. I got there 20minutes before and waited for 40 minutes. Okay no biggie I know how other patients might need some more time. Suddenly in his passing doctor Unprofessional (is his name now) called my only half my name and just kept walking. I grabbed my backpack and started following him. He smelled like coffee. The way he came to get me was enough to make me shake. I was already so stressed and exhausted and I immediately had a bad feeling about this guy.
We walk into his office through double doors, one being on the outside and another on the inside. So I asked him ‘should I close the doors? Or maybe one of the two?’ Without even looking at me he says in the most degrading tone ‘just close one’. Okay don’t panic, maybe he’ll loosen up. To my left upon entering I see multiple chairs typical for a conversation with a therapist yk what I mean I hope lol. At the end I see his desk and 2 chairs facing the desk. He is opening a window next to his desk. So I stand there and wait for him to tell me where I can take a seat, as I was used to other therapists doing so. Eventually I had to ask where I should sit. I couldn’t even finish my sentence before he gestured towards the chairs in front of the desk and said ‘here’.
There was no introduction at all and he didn’t ask anything about me. The first question he asked me was ‘were you reffered?’. Again really degrading and like I didn’t matter. Like I was there not to ask for help but to be an inconvenience. I already feel like a child when I have to go talk to doctors or therapists and he made it so much worse. He talked to me as if I was stupid. I will not script the whole “conversation” we had but I will try to explain how it went. He basically told me they don’t do diagnosis as if I had to know that already. He gave me the impression he could not help me and was not intending to do so nor that he even wanted to. I told him I have adhd and suspicion of autism and he referred to that sentence later as ‘your adhd and whatever else’. He made me feel like I was a stupid little kid who didn’t know left from right and as if I was wasting his time. Eventually I left. He didn’t tell me to leave or anything, he just kept staring at me saying nothing. I then said ‘okay’ got up and left. Once I was walking home I called my mom and explained what had happened and cried like a child. She’s going to help me find someone who can actually help me. I hate this, he wasted my time and the little energy I have.
It’s truly infuriating how these kind of people can become therapists. I feel for the people who are in their care. If you made it this far, thank you for reading my brain dump. ♥️

2023.06.06 18:20 Book_Golem Battle Report (Soulblight vs Kharadron)
Well, I've finally played a whole five turn game of Age of Sigmar, with the latest General's Handbook and everything! I want to get into the habit of writing up battle reports, so here goes.
The Armies
My 1000pt list was the following:
Bloodline: Vyrkos
Leaders Wight King on Skeletal Steed (Warlord) ++General (Hunter's Snare)
Necromancer (Warlord) ++Waste Away ++Ulfenkarni Phylactery
Vampire Lord (Warlord) ++Spirit Gale ++Vial of Manticore Venom (bonus from Battalion)
Battleline 20 Skeletons (Galletian Veterans)
10 Skeletons (Galletian Veterans)
10 Grave Guard (Galletian Veterans) ++Greatblades
Other 5 Black Knights (Warlord)
3 Vyrkos Blood-born (Warlord)
Grand Strategy: Empire of Corpses
Total Points: 975
This is the list I used in my last game, with the intent that I don't need to learn any new units this way. I still don't have any Dire Wolves, so that's an aspect of Vyrkos I won't be able to take advantage of.
My opponent was running Kharadron Overlords. As I recall, it was something like this:
Sky-Port: Barak Murder-you-on-the-charge
Leaders Admiral ++Arcane Tome
Aether Khemist ++ Spell in a bottle (Purple Sun)
Aetheric Navigator
Battleline (I assume) 3 Skywardens
3 Skywardens
3 Endrinriggers
Behemoths Frigate ++Cannon ++Flagship
Grand Strategy: Keep the Frigate Alive (and also kill all enemy flying units)
It's sort of the opposite of my list - everything is fast and small units, while mine's slow and large.
Mission and Deployment
The mission ended up being Jaws of Gallet, the one where each round after the first the player going second can nominate an objective to be removed. I set up the table as a ruined city, with quite a lot of small pieces of ruins terrain laid out on a mat covered in cobbled roads. I'd intended for this to be a way to get the terrain out of the box prior to my opponent arriving, but he was happy with the layout (and naturally got to pick territory). Plus it's nice to play on a map that makes cohesive sense!
I deployed somewhat conservatively - the small unit of skeletons hanging back to hold my home objective, Black Knights and the Wight King on the left flank to run up and take the Northwest objective on turn one, the Necromancer and large Skeleton unit on the right flank to push for the Southeast objective, and the Vampire Lord and Blood-born taking the centre. The Grave Guard went into the grave, having been too slow to really help in previous games.
My opponent put his Navigator and Frigate on his back objective (Northeast), and everything else in the boat. I immediately worried about how I was ever going to catch these jerks.
Round 1
My opponent got priority, and gave me the first turn. I immediately advanced on both flanks and up the centre, taking four Objectives and scoring the Cunning Manoeuvre Battle Tactic (for getting my Necromancer onto the Southeast objective, which was in both our territories). Spirit Gale and Mystic Shield both failed to cast, heralding a depressingly familiar start to my spellcasting for the game.
I jumped the Grave Guard out 9" away from my opponent's Navigator, hoping for a long charge to take him out early. Alas, a 7 rerolled into a 7, and they sat around in front of the entire enemy army looking very vulnerable instead.
My opponent got things rolling on his turn, disembarking the Admiral and Khemist and moving them towards the centre objective, taking it from me (as the Admiral counts as 2 models, and either not all of my vampires were quite in range or we miscounted). Meanwhile, the Frigate itself advanced on my Necromancer's contingent, blasting away some of his defensive Skeletons. The Navigator sat on the Northeast point, and started slowing/damaging my units and giving a movement boost to the Frigate like a jerk. Also, the Khemist killed some of my Grave Guard and dropped the Purple Sun on my Blood-born.
The frigate charged my Skeleton Horde (with some of them reassembling in front of it), and both units of Skywardens piled out. Here I made another mistake, forgetting that the Necromancer can offload wounds onto nearby Summonable units, and one unit of Skywardens decided that they weren't having any of that 5+ Ward nonsense and murdered him. Ah well, he wasn't much of a minion anyway. The Skeletons held out though, and put a wound on each of the Skywarden units.
Round 2
My opponent won priority and decided to go for the double turn. Oof.
The Navigator chipped a few more wounds off the Blood-born and the Grave Guard, the Khemist likewise fumigating my wights. The Frigate remained in combat, though one unit of Skywardens peeled off to deal with my backline Skeleton unit. The Admiral charged my Blood-born, killing them outright but straying into pile-in territory of my Vampire Lord, who proceeded to beat him around the head with a mace for a little bit. The Skeleton Horde remained "strong", recovering plenty of models in the combat phase and then being reduced to a single unit champion remaining. This could have gone a lot worse. (Good thing that conniving Necromancer was dead, I might have lost the Skeletons if he'd been offloading wounds onto them!)
On my turn, I removed the objective my opponent's Navigator was sitting on. That'll tech him! I also used the Genera's Handbook Heroic Action Strike At The Opening to fight in the Hero Phase with my Vampire Lord, dealing a little more damage to the enemy Admiral. That guy is very durable! More skeletons regenerated, though tragically my Grave Guard weren't close enough to my Vampire Lord to recover any models. I also managed to actually cast Spirit Gale this time, chipping wounds off every enemy and slaying one Skywarden from each unit thanks to previous damage.
My cavalry swept in from the left, taking back the centre control point and giving me more lovely victory points. I had the Wight King hang back an inch or two to continue contesting the Northwest objective too. In the combat phase, many Skeletons reassembled, and my Vampire Lord weathered a beating but finally finished off the Admiral (immediately recovering damage taken thanks to The Hunger), scoring me The Choicest Vintage. Also, the sole surviving Grave Guard charged the Khemist, though failed to do anything of note.
Round 3
I won priority. Time for a counter double turn!
This turn I forgot to pick a Battle Tactic. My opponent was kind enough to let me pick one randomly when I remembered at the start of the combat phase, but there was no chance of completing This One's Mine by then.
A few key things happened this turn. First, I was reminded that Objectives in Age of Sigmar are sticky, and you don't have to leave units on them. Second, my opponent removed my backline (Southwest) objective, freeing up my Skeletons to move even if it wasn't sticky. Thirdly, my opponent got fed up of the Purple Sun and dispelled it - it was sitting in the centre of the board and making it risky for him to move his troops nearby, while I was basically ignoring it. (I failed to cast anything so his Navigator had a dispel left.)
I began moving my Skeletons towards the centre, while the Skeleton Horde continued to regenerate itself (and also move to retake the Southeast objective, now that it had enough models again). My Black Knights continued to sweep eastward, flattening the Khemist with 7 Mortal Wounds on the charge, and my Vampire Lord charged back South to deal with the separated unit of Skywardens, wiping them out in a single round.
My opponent Flew High with the Frigate, transporting the remaining unit of Skywardens and the Endrinriggers close to the Northwest objective. His Navigator slowed my cavalry contingent to a crawl, and plinked the last Wound off the Grave Guard in the Hero phase - I responded by immediately re-summoning them at the end of the Movement phase to contest the Northwest objective (and to distract from everything shooting my Wight King).
The Grave Guard ate a lot of fire, though not enough to save the mounted Wight King from taking enough fire to kill him too. That hurt, I needed units that can actually do damage. There wasn't much (or any?) combat this turn, just a lot of my important units getting shot. Ouch.
Round 4
I won priority, and so we didn't have a double turn this time!
On the other hand, my opponent removed the Southeast objective, leaving my Skeleton Horde hanging around a big hole in the ground rather than delicious loot. This turn, with thin pickings for Battle Tactics, I chose Endless Nightmare - unfortunately, my big unit of Skeletons was up to 14 models by this point; I'd need to revive four in the Hero Phase and then pass the 25% chance to reassemble the other two in the Combat Phase.
I pushed my forces towards the centre of the battlefield, my Vampire Lord flying 11" to catch up with the two units of skeletons, and my Wight King popping back out of the grave to get even more control on the central point. The Black Knights attempted a long charge at the Frigate, hoping to wipe out one of the units inside with a good set of Mortals, but even with a reroll they couldn't make it in. To make matters worse, I only revived one Skeleton in the combat phase, failing my Battle Tactic. All in all, I scored only a single point this turn, and things started to look grim.
In my opponent's turn, he chipped wounds off my cavalry with the Navigator again, shot the Black Knights off the table, and disembarked the Skywardens to take the central Objective. There was also a bunch of shooting at my Wight King, but in cover and with Finest Hour up he weathered the storm this time.
Round 5
My opponent won priority again, leading to the most double turns I've seen in a single game of AoS. I also completely forgot to remove an objective this round, leading to extra points scored for my opponent - whoops.
The Skywardens went Northwest to contest that objective against emerging Black Knights - my opponent had to choose between running (and preventing my Knights from taking the objective from him if they emerged on his turn by contesting it) or not running (and hoping that their ranged weapons would be enough to sweep the Knights if they showed up this turn). He chose not to run, resulting in only a single Skywarden being within 6" of the Objective. As it was, the Black Knights did not emerge this turn (I rolled for it though, which was probably a mistake).
The Frigate and the Endrinriggers then charged Wight King and both units of Skeletons. With everything together, (and a series of unlucky saves) the Wight King died again, leaving my opponent in control of both objectives. It was going to come down to the Vampire Lord to save the day.
On my turn I selected Eye for an Eye as the only Battle Tactic I really had a hope of completing. I needed to kill either the Frigate (unlikely, but wins me the game at this point) or the Endrinriggers (much more likely, but I wasn't sure it'd be enough), while also getting enough skeletons onto the central point to take it and getting my Black Knights back to take the Northwest objective. Yikes.
I started strong by casting Grinding Teeth of Gallet on the central Objective, catching the Frigate, Endrinriggers, and my Skeletons (oh no, not the skeletons). And then I flubbed all the rolls, resulting in no Mortal Wounds to anybody. Total effective spells cast this game: 1.
Next up, I moved the Vampire Lord into position for a 3" charge into the Frigate and successfully brought back the Black Knights! That's the Northwest Objective taken care of, along with my Grand Strategy.
Finally, the combat phase. The Vampire Lord made his charge, and immediately rolled five misses for his attacks. Oof. So much for taking out the Frigate. Due to poor positioning on my part, both units of skeletons had to split attacks between the Frigate and the Endrinriggers, though the Horde did manage to pile in close enough to the objective to take that for me too. It came down to the wire, but with Crimson Feast and All Out Attack active, the Horde also managed to kill off the last two Endrinriggers, scoring my last grasp of points!
Final result: 22 - 22, Draw
Phew!
I definitely made mistakes this game, but so did my opponent. I'm happy with the result - there were a lot of things that happened that could have swung it one way or the other, and in the end a draw honestly feels like a hard-fought victory!
Learning points
Battle Tactics are a really fiddly part of the game. I don't even have the six Vampire ones memorised, never mind the eight other options! That's definitely going to be a sticking point for me learning this game properly.
I really like the Vampire Lord, though I can definitely see why people like taking Legion of Blood for them - extra casting ability and more attacks would both have been very useful in this game. They're also not quite as damaging in combat as I keep thinking they are, which is something I'll have to keep in mind.
On the topic of casting: oof. One successful spell over the course of the game is not what I'd been hoping to see. Granted, some of those were dispelled by the Navigator, but I think I missed casting well over half of them in the first place - and losing the Necromancer early on didn't help with that. I feel like I'd like to be the magically dominant faction in most matchups (outside Tzeentch or Lizardmen), so more wizards might be the way to go. Or at least the Arcane Tome on the Wight King.
Vyrkos really didn't do much for me this game, though what it did do may have kept me in it. The 5+ Ward on the Skeleton Horde helped out on turn one, when the most damage was incoming; while the Wight King counting as seven models forced my opponent to make some riskier plays to take the central objective from me. I never managed to chain activate heroes and units, and as mentioned earlier I don't have the models for summoned wolves yet. I think I'll try out Legion of Blood next time for better Vampires.
I almost completely wasted the Grave Guard this game. A unit of ten Skeletons would have done better in their position. I think I need to keep them in the grave a little longer - if I'd brought them out a turn later they could have easily deleted the Navigator for me. (They were still useful for taking fire, but I'd rather not spend 140pts to do that when 85 would suffice!)
Kharadron Overlords are frustrating to fight against, but also Skeletons seem to be a great counter to them - coming back in the Combat phase means you can regenerate a lot of the damage that they do with shooting.
The Navigator is an incredible utility piece too - moving ships, dealing Mortal Wounds, and most annoyingly halving the speed of my units to stop them getting where I needed them to go. I know it's only based on rolls of one and six, but with a reroll each turn (from a command, I think? Or possibly an artefact.) he was able to get both effects off every round damaging multiple units.
The Frigate was cool, if infuriating. My opponent attempted to drop bombs with it in the movement phase exactly once, and came to the same conclusion I did about moving across enemy units: it's basically impossible. Doubtless there's some professional strategy for doing it consistently, but it looks to me like you'd have to start 3" away and fly over no more than 1" of model to get the frigate to fly over a unit given its base size.
We completed the game in somewhere over three hours. Not bad given that I'm still learning all the rules, but definitely something to work on.
Anyway, thanks for reading, and I hope this was enjoyable. I'm always open to advice - I know I've got a lot to learn about how the army works!
Next step: paint all the skeletons!

2023.06.06 18:18 No-Lynx5025 Does anyone have any positive Frontier experiences?????
I’m flying Frontier from LGA to DFW tomorrow 6/7, flight is supposed to leave at 10:55 PM and arrive at 1:53 AM on 6/8. I have flown spirit countless times with no issues; since it’s only a 5 day trip and I don’t need to check bags I thought Frontier would be a good option. I’m only flying Frontier one way, my return flight is Spirit.
Then I fell down the rabbit hole of everyone’s god awful experiences with them. I’m not worried about the infamous personal item situation since I paid for a carry on, what I’m concerned about is the flight getting canceled. It looks like they run this same flight every day all week, and it was canceled last night but I don’t know why. I’m going to keep checking the flight status of tonight’s flight and if it gets canceled will probably just get another flight via Delta or American to ease my anxiety. I’d rather avoid doing this since it’ll cost me an extra $300 but if tonight’s flight gets canceled I don’t know if i want to risk it.
Of course I know no one knows what will happen but can anyone ease my nerves here??? I’m am so stressed it’s not even funny, I’m flying to see some family and really can’t afford to lose an extra day by dealing with rescheduling flights. I know now booking Frontier was a bad idea, I’m normally a very no frills traveler and can deal with the uncomfortable seats and stuff but I did not realize how frequently they cancel flights for seemingly no reason.

2023.06.06 18:18 Ok_Ocelot_9661 I got soft fired for looking for another job!
I just need to rant anonymously.
So, long story short, I clearly work at a toxic company. It’s a startup and my CEO is a raging narcissist. When he didn’t take Covid seriously I was ready to leave, but couldn’t afford to. Then I got a promotion with a large pay increase - so I took some time to learn the new job duties so I could have it on my resume.
Early this yearly, I started applying for other jobs. Nothing too aggressive, just if a position or company intrigued me, I’d apply. At the same time, I was getting head hunted. All the while, I’m severely under paid doing the work of three people at my current job.
I told one of the executives who knows I’m underpaid and overworked that I’d had some recruiters reach out to me. He’s had the same thing happen, and I can tell he’s unhappy, so we’ve discussed it a bit.
I’m pretty sure he went to my CEO and basically said ‘hey, if we don’t treat her better and pay her better, we might lose her’. I’m not upset he did this, because he had good intentions. He just doesn’t know our CEO well enough to know how he would react. I do.
Well. My CEO decided that meant that since I’m unhappy, he could ‘soft fire’ me.
Essentially, I’ve been given about two months to find a new job. If, at the end of those two months, I have not found a new job, I get two weeks severance. He’s framing this as a mutual exit plan, but really he fired me.
So what was a casual job search has turned into a dire job search because I live paycheck to paycheck. I don’t have enough savings to be able to afford to not have a job. It doesn’t help that the job market is absolutely bonkers right now and a lot of people are trying to find jobs thanks to the recent massive layoffs.
Because I no longer have time to find an ideal position, I’m now also forced to give up certain things on my wish list - like a specific salary point and a remote role.
Meanwhile, he is expecting me to continue giving my job 100% while also knowing I’m having to spend 10+ hours a week applying to jobs and interviewing.
Avoid startups at all cost. In my experience, most of the CEOs are all alike - and this isn’t the first time my CEO has pulled this move with someone.
The only positive is there is a light at the end of the tunnel for me getting out of an extremely toxic work environment.
End rant.

2023.06.06 18:16 VentureVoyage How Duolingo A/B Tested Their Way into a $6.4 Billion Worth With Its Freemium Model
''Beg for your life in Spanish,'' says the green Duolingo owl popping up on your screen because you forgot to do your lesson. But he's not always threatening. Sometimes, the messages are more passive-aggressive.
But are Duo's threat's responsible for Duolingo generating a revenue of $116 million in 2023 Q1, a 42% increase from 2022? Or is the mascot's menacing stance why the company has reported a 62% DAU (Daily Active Users) growth year-over-year?
Maybe and maybe.
But we believe Luis von Ahn's vision and the company's focus on A/B testing had a bigger role in its success. Here's what we mean.
Target to a Large Market (sometimes).
Nowadays, many entrepreneurs believe the formula to success is to focus on a niche market, and we're not saying that's wrong. But Luis von Ahn and Severin Hacker, the founders of Duolingo, did things differently.
Before Duolingo was even a thing, Rosetta Stone was all the hype in the language learning industry, raising $112.5 million on its first trading day. But here's where the company went wrong: it targeted only a small group by charging hundreds of dollars for its subscription plans.
The Duolingo founders were of the belief that ''true equality is when spending more can’t buy you a better education.” That's how the idea of a free language-learning app came into being.
Duolingo was able to give its competitors a run for their money by simply finding untapped potential. The idea was to let people learn languages for free. And it worked!
Today, everyone uses Duolingo, from a student who wants to learn Spanish to work at a call center to Bill Gates and Khloe Kardashian.
And von Ahn considers it a success that the ''richest man in the world is using the same system as the lowest people on the economic scale.''
As of 2022, Duolingo had 3.3 million paid subscribers and 49.5 million monthly active users. That includes Jack Dorsey, former CEO of Twitter, and Syrian refugees living in Turkey.
Be Data-Driven and A/B Test Everything.
Duolingo repeatedly says that it's a data-driven company. Because it is.
Micro changes have been the prime reason Duolingo's user base increased from 120 million in 2015 to 575 million in 2021. One example of this is the optimization of Duolingo's signup page.
The company noticed many users open the app but don't sign up. So, they experimented with different signup screens.
Eventually, they discovered that letting people use the app for a while before asking them to sign up would work. And it did, increasing the DAUs by 20%.
The team did the same with streaks. They quickly realized that even after sign-ups, it was hard to get people to open the app every day. So, they introduced streaks, urging users to come back every day.
Tweaking the stream notification copy alone increased DAUs by 5%.
Never Stop Evolving and Experimenting.
Had von Ahn kept Duolingo stagnant like Rosetta Stone, it would have never become the sensation it is today. Here's how quickly and consistently Duolingo evolved:
- CNN and Buzzfeed Partnership: Duolingo partnered with CNN and Buzzfeed, earning through user-translated content. The partnership worked because Duo's pricing - at 4 cents per word - was cheaper than the industry average of 6 to 10 cents/word. Users also seemed to have a lot of fun, with 600 articles being translated daily.
- Duolingo Incubator: The company introduced an Incubator program where contributors could create a course for a language unavailable on the platform. In just three years, contributors created 87 courses that benefitted more than 150 million people.
- Test Center: In 2014, Duolingo released its Test Center, a TOEFL or IELTS-like test that users could take to get their English language certification for foreign employment and educational opportunities. Many universities and employers, including Uber, accept this test.
- Duolingo for Schools: It's a free service that allows teachers to teach languages in classrooms. About 100,000 teachers signed up for Duolingo just a few months after this feature's release.
There you have it; Duolingo's recipe for success.
We would love to hear your feedback on this post, as this was our first. Any and all suggestions are welcome!

2023.06.06 18:13 whattodo9000 HELP I'm pregnant and overwhelmed
Omg. My boyfriend and I stopped using contraception lately and I didn't even track my ovulation. My last period started May 1st and the first time we had unprotected sex was May 18th, so I was sure we had passed the fertile period for this month anyway.
We had intercourse again twice the days after and on May 28th. After the 29th, my period should have come, but it didn't. From then on I've done a test every morning, but all of them were negative. Had no symptoms either.
Yesterday afternoon I got very light spotting so I thought my period had come. My boobs suddenly became really sore too. I had weird dreams at night, light cramping and was feeling hot. Woke up like 2 times and felt super uncomfortable, more than I usually do on my period. I was sure my pad was soaked with blood already, but I was too lazy to check.
Morning came and I took off my pants to pee... no blood. Did a pregnancy test, negative. Took a quick shower and checked the test again, now it had a faint positive line, OMG! But the packaging said not to check results after 10 minutes and the Internet said its a vaporation line, so I shrugged it off.
It kept bothering me though, and now after work, I did another test. Sure thing it's positive! I'm freaking out but also so scared! Can't even tell my boyfriend yet because he's still at work. PLEASE HELP ME WITH THE FOLLOWING:
- Since my first unprotected intercourse I've had a total of 3 glasses of wine, the last one on Sunday. On all of those days I had tested negative. I even just ripped apart our trashbag to see if the tests actually stayed negative...and yes they did. I'm still scared, could this have been harmful!? Obviously not drinking from now on.
- I'm leaving for vacation in the beginning of next week, and because of that and national holidays this week where I live, there's no way I'll get a doctors appointment before that. The earliest I can do is end of June. Is that bad!?
- How do I even know how far along I am because the dates kinda don't add up?
Thanks to anyone who has the patience to read and answer this...

Its surface has an ocean of Tetrahydrothiophene that covers 75% of its surface, and the mainland is made up mainly of Silicates and Carbons, with sulphide minerals. The age of the planet is around 5,200 million years, its average temperature is 32°C, and it has dry ice caps, the only ones that remain permanently do so in the great mountains and the coldest and most remote regions of the poles. In the distant past the atmosphere was very dynamic and reactive, this allowed the appearance of an ocean of Tetrahydrothiophene on its surface, the ocean would have allowed the dissolution of carbon sulfides in it, this combined with its environment rich in carbon and sulfur compounds, made abiotic reactions took place that allowed the formation of carbon-sulfur biomolecules such as thiols, sulfones, sulfoxides, etc. Thiols play an important role in the stability and metabolism of biomolecules, since they are involved in the formation of disulfide bridges that confer the stability of proteins, amino acids, and enzymes. Sulfides also play an important role, since they are key components in energy storage molecules, such as adenosine triphosphates, in addition to having adaptations in their structures and bonds to function efficiently in their environment, this allowed them to adapt to their environment and resist changes in it, they began to form covalent and non-covalent bonds with the sulfur in their solvent, this would allow them to react selectively with the molecules there, over time they began to develop more specialized and complex enzymes to take advantage of Tetrahydrothiophene as a source of energy in its metabolic processes, and it began to be used for oxidation reactions but above all for reduction in the sulfur that makes it up to use it energetically, in addition to detoxification mechanisms using enzymes that metabolize tetrahydrothiophene, the carbon-sulphide bonds were getting stronger and began to adapt three-dimensional structures in their molecular structure to be able to adapt them even more to tetrahydrothiophene and extend their useful life. The adaptation of a three-dimensional molecular structure allowed them to form more complex structures known as XNA (Xenonucleic Acid), the column would be made from sulfur glucose and phosphodiester, while the base pairs would be made from compounds called Sulfurin, Sulfatin, Sulfucytosine and Sulfothymine that would be analogous to DNA compounds. When this happened, the first self-replicating biomolecules appeared. Replication consists of the separation of the strands of the molecule and the synthesis of new complementary strands using carbon-sulfur bases. These primitive self-replicating biomolecules would have easily broken down as they replicated, however the new biomolecules would have begun to adapt specialized enzymes to correct the errors of their predecessors in order to have more specialized offspring, this allowed to create stronger bonds capable of resisting the degradation and repair errors in your sequences. This acid has a double-stranded structure, where the nucleotide bases are paired by hydrogen bonds, it has specialized proteins and enzymes that act on its structure and allow it to remain stable in its environment, it has the ability to encode the genetic information necessary for the protein synthesis and the transmission of hereditary characteristics, as well as being involved in transcription processes. As a byproduct of their nitrogen-hydrogen metabolism, they began to produce ammonia, but instead of reducing it, they began to use it directly, for more efficient metabolic reactions, such as the synthesis of amino acids, proteins, and nucleotides. That was not the only new adaptation, but rather they would have also started to use it to form amides by reacting with carbon dioxide, and finally they would have integrated it into their structure to form complex biopolymers, finally the enzymes would have catalyzed thioester fatty acids (CS) and thiol alcohol (CSH) to form thiol phospholipids, these would be stronger and less reactive than conventional phospholipids, so they are more rigid and stable. Regarding their structure, they would have a polar head that would contain the phosphate group and a tail made up of carbon-sulfide chains, they would have greater resistance to extreme conditions such as high temperatures and chemically aggressive environments, in addition to having greater resistance to oxidation. Finally these would have joined amino acids, proteins and nucleic acids to form cell nuclei that would be covered by a membrane, these cells would be able to self-replicate and begin to develop on their own until they formed organisms. And it is here where LUCA makes its first appearance, LUCA was a prokaryotic bacterium and it gave rise to the Ammonibacteria, these would have enzymes and specialized proteins that would allow them to capture and reduce ammonia from the environment, the ammonia would break down in the cell through the dehydrogenase enzymes, the ammonia would be oxidized, releasing electrons and protons in the process, these would be used to produce hydrogen molecules, nitrogen would be released into the environment, thus enriching the atmosphere. The hydrogen would be processed in the cell converting it into usable energy which would be transported through the cell generating different reactions that would favor the cell itself. Other bacteria such as Hidrobacter would begin to assimilate Carbon Dioxide and Carbon Monoxide to reduce it to free hydrogen, and integrating carbon into their cell structure, this would lay the foundations of the modern Kanian atmosphere. With the passing of millions of years, the atmosphere began to be enriched to a great extent with nitrogen, and partially with hydrogen, this on the one hand brought benefits, with nitrogen the atmosphere was less hostile and made it more suitable for breathing, in addition to that reduced greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, but on the other hand, the atmosphere began to be enriched with hydrogen and although there were species that used it as an energy source, the truth is that its use was not as widespread as it is today , the atmosphere began to fill excessively with hydrogen, until it reached a critical threshold and was present in the atmosphere in a significant way. This had important consequences for life at the time, since hydrogen was highly reactive and toxic to most forms of life that existed at the time. And so the first great mass extinction in Kane's history occurred. Hydrogen completely changed the geological structure and weathering of the planet, changing the way in which the crust is modified, marking a before and after in the history of the planet. After the chaos, finally the surviving bacteria such as Amonibacter, Hidrobacter and Hidrotrobacter would end up adapting to the hydrogen-rich environment, Hidrotrobacter would end up diverging to form the Protoacras, Protoacra was a type of flagellated prokaryotic bacterium adapted to be able to take advantage of hydrogen to the greatest extent that If possible, these bacteria would end up spreading throughout the world just like their predecessors, Protoacra became a very successful species by the standards of its time, it would end up diverging to form two of the three Eukaryotic domains on the planet, animals and mycelia. The metabolic system of these bacteria would be very similar to that of their predecessors, assimilating hydrogen and leaving carbon monoxide as a byproduct, these would be used by Hidrobacter and Amonibacter to produce glucose and releasing nitrogen and hydrogen as a byproduct, finally creating a stable system. Hidrobacter and Amonibacter would end up generating bacterial crossbreeding between them, giving rise to the third Eukaryotic domain, the Hydrozoans, they would end up adapting Photosynthesis and Chemosynthesis as an essential part of their metabolism, since they absorbed carbon monoxide and used the energy of their star to reduce it into hydrogen and glucose, later the flagellated Eukaryotes would carry these elements through the food chain. However, given that solar energy is more limited on this planet, they could not form organisms with a high level of complexity, however they did adapt black pigments in order to get the most out of the energy that was possible. The animal Eukaryotes for their part began to develop exponentially, adapting more effective methods of locomotion, and the first eyes on evolutionary history, this proved to be a huge leap in evolution. Although the mycelia did not have so many adaptations, they did manage to achieve very effective methods to obtain food in their environment. They were becoming more complex due to the availability of Hydrogen and its increasingly efficient methods to take advantage of it, until eventually reaching the current level after the mass extinctions. submitted by TRGNG to SpeculativeEvolution [link] [comments] |
2023.06.06 17:39 No-Lynx5025 Does anyone have any positive Frontier experiences?????
It looks like they run this same flight every day all week, and it was canceled last night. I’m going to keep checking the flight status of tonight’s flight and if it gets canceled will probably just get another flight via Delta or American to ease my anxiety.

Memory transcription subject: Tassak, Arxur Paleontologist
Date [standardized human time]: July 15, 2165
I nervously clicked my claws against the wooden table as I waited for the rest of the invitees to arrive. The UN had brought me to the senate building privately so as to not cause panic, and I was grateful. I only hoped that the people whom I was going to be working with wouldn’t freak out at my appearance.
The war against the Federation and the subjugation of the Arxur by the Dominion had ended shortly after my birth, but the effects of the past few centuries of conflict could not be eliminated in such a short amount of time. Societal ideals have to be rewritten over long stretches of time by strong people with strong will, and there simply hasn’t been enough time to do so. As a result, though it has been many years since the last battle against the Arxur, it was still uncommon to see any outside of the space they already inhabited, and still VERY common to see hatred and fear of us among Fed species. It has always been my ultimate goal to show those who fear us just how similar we are, that is why I sacrificed everything to attend the Meiers Institute of Knowledge.
On the Arxur’s side of the societal coin, it was social suicide to interact with “prey” species willingly. [Oh how I hate that word.] Most of the elders of our society could not get over their hatred of the Federation species, despite the fact that they were under just as much, if not MORE subjugation than we were. When I made the decision to go and learn at MIK, I was shunned from all social groups at home. Not that there even were many, most Arxur rarely interacted with each other if they could help it.
MIK was a chance for me to experience new ideas and try new things. For once, I wasn’t discriminated against because I had front-facing eyes and scary teeth, and I learned just how much I loved socializing with like-minded people. I was finally allowed to let my love for knowledge flourish in a way that other Arxur would never have condoned. I graduated some time later with several degrees and a doctorate in paleontology.
Though to some, the idea of digging up bones and putting them together like a puzzle seemed macabre, it felt liberating to me. I felt like I truly understood the value of life and death. I could look at the cracked tooth of an ancient ancestor of the Arxur or the fossilized chitin of one of the Tilfish’s predecessors and identify a pattern, showing the divergent evolution they underwent to achieve their current form. I could see the similarities all life inherently had. Sometimes the similarities between us were shocking, and occasionally it was kind-of scary, but that only made me more passionate about my work.
I assume that is why the UN decided to send me a job offer 3 weeks ago. When I received it I was ECSTATIC at the prospect. The UN government sending ME, a small-time nobody Arxur paleontologist, an invitation to work with them? If I could tell my past self what I would be up to now, I would almost certainly scoff at myself. Even as I boarded my UN funded private ship to Aafa I was subconsciously wondering if it was some elaborate prank. My thoughts were interrupted as I heard footsteps from the other side of the door. This is it, I’m about to meet my partners, please don’t run away screaming.
A human, a venlil, and a gojid stood in the doorway staring at me. The gojid seemed slightly fearful but hid it well, the human and venlil however just seemed confused. [Okay, okay, they didn’t scream at me. That’s a good start.] The three, along with their escort, settled into chairs at the table I sat at, looking at me expectantly. I straightened my posture and prepared myself mentally to greet them. “H-hi, my name is Tassak. Are you the other three invitees?” The human sitting across from me spoke. “Yes. I hope I don’t offend by saying this but I wasn’t expecting an Arxur invitee.” He raised an eyebrow as he ended his sentence. He quickly started talking again, probably to try and explain his reasoning. “Sorry, I-I mean, don’t the Arxur frown upon interacting with “prey” species?” The venlil and gojid looked at me as I thought of a response. “Yes, they do. I had to cut a lot of ties to get into this profession. Let’s get introductions out of the way please.” “Alright, my name is James. I’m 31 years old. I was born on Earth and now live on Venlil prime. I went to MIK to become a historian. My diet is mainly coffee but occasionally I drink coffee as a treat.” The man smiled as he awaited our amusement, but it never came. James’ smirk faded and he coughed into his hand before continuing. “I was invited along with my friend Lemva, she’s the venlil next to me, and Cayek, he’s the gojid to your right.”
I exhaled quietly, James seemed friendly enough. “My name is Tassak, as I said before. I’m 29. I got a doctorate in paleontology at the Meiers Institute of Knowledge, along with some other degrees. I hail from Wriss I currently live on Earth.” As I finished my statement, I couldn’t help but criticize the way I spoke. [Why did I talk so rigidly, ughhh! My first impressions are going terribly!] James spoke up. “Wait, did we all come from MIK? Weird coincidence huh?” I could tell he was trying to ease the tension in the room. “I thought I would’ve noticed a giant lizard guy walking around campus.” Wait, did he call me a guy? “Uh, I’m a girl, actually.” I spoke timidly. The man before me became as red as a fresh cut of steak. His embarrassment was plainly visible, which I found amusing, it lessened my anxiety slightly.
The venlil that James had referred to as Lemva spoke up, changing the subject. “Weelll… Anyhow, my name is Lemva as James told you. I’m 30 years old. I’m an archaeologist and got my doctorate from MIK. My current home is on Earth but I’ve lived a little bit of everywhere. Me and James have been friends for a long time, we met in the institute’s history club.” Everyone focused their attention onto Cayek as Lemva’s introduction concluded. It took several seconds for him to compose himself. I could tell that my presence was uncomfortable for him, and him being seated closest to me of the three people probably exacerbated that feeling. I didn’t blame him for his fear, but it still stung a little. He gulped and started talking.
“My name is Cayek. I’m a 41 year old linguist who also went to MIK for my doctorate. I was born on the Cradle, was taken in at a young age by the UN after it got bombed, and was offered a home in one of the cities constructed by the Cradle Re-colonization Project, where I now live.” The man stopped talking and I thought he was done, but he straightened his posture and started speaking again. “I just want to get this out of the way before it causes trouble later down the line.” He spoke with a sigh. “I was born in a… you could call it a “hostile” household. My family raised me during a time when hate against… “people who were different” was acceptable. My upbringing cemented a couple habits into me that I’ve been trying to chip away at, so to speak, ever since I saw the sheer good that mankind is capable of. I’ve been attempting to be more open to new ideas ever since. Hell, I even took the anti-cure and tried some-” He gulped. “-non-herbivore cuisine, to get some perspective. So if I accidentally say or do something offensive to you please tell me, I truly want to leave that part of me behind.” As he ended his speech, he slouched and let out a breath he had been holding in. I was surprised by his honesty.
James and Lemva both processed the information. I responded first. “Thank you. You have no idea how much anxiety dropped off my shoulders just now. I was worried you’d all run away at first sight of me or treat me like some bloodthirsty beast. I very much appreciate the effort you’re putting into reforming.” James spoke after me. “I appreciate it too. After all these riots it’s such a breath of fresh air to meet a person that won’t cry if I look at them.” In the past 10 minutes, this man had crammed in jokes at any time he could. I think I’m gonna like him. I could tell that the joke came from a place of sadness though, I could see the sadness in his eyes.
James started to look impatient, he tapped his fingers on the table in a rhythmic pattern while he checked his holopad for the time. “I thought we were here for a job offer. How long is this gon-” The sound of the heavy wooden door opening filled the room, as a small group of well-dressed men and women filed in through the doorway. As my eyes scanned over each person who entered, my heart skipped a beat and I jolted upward to attempt a human salute as I spotted President Zhao at the tail-end of the group. [What the fuck? Why is he meeting with us?] The other three followed my gaze and stood to salute as well. In his surprise, James nearly fell over. My three partners were as equally dumbstruck as I by the sudden appearance of the head of the government.
President Zhao took on a small amused smirk as he witnessed James straighten himself out. “At ease. You may take a seat.” We did as he commanded. “Welcome to the Capitol. It’s good to see that you all accepted your invitations. I can see from your confused expressions that you probably want some answers, so let’s get started.” As Zhao took a seat at the head of the table, one of the men who had accompanied him lifted a briefcase from his side and placed it delicately on the table. The man inputted a code into a small keypad and the briefcase unlocked with a click. Inside was a holo-projector, which the man placed on the center of the table. “Before we begin, our four guests will need to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement, the information spoken of in this meeting must never leave this room.” Another of the officials, a small woman in a black dress, passed four holopads to us, which we promptly wrote our signatures into. The holopads were collected and Zhao spoke. “Excellent. You’re probably all curious about the reason we invited you specifically for this opportunity, why all the security measures and guards, why we’re trying to keep this under such tight wraps.” The holo-projector on the table switched on and briefly displayed the Coalition logo, before transitioning to a hologram of Talsk, the Farsul homeworld. “As you know, for hundreds of years the Federation had been keeping archives filled with classified knowledge and confiscated or outright stolen items. On the nineteenth of june, approximately four weeks ago, after extensive search efforts, we found the motherlode. The Federation had kept many archives but this one was special. It wasn’t a library, it was a tomb. Buried under several kilometers of rock and deep ocean, the Federation sealed away items and information that, if released, could possibly threaten their hold over the galaxy.”
The holo-projector transitioned to a diagram depicting the archive, there was no entrance-way and no exit, just kilometers of water and stone between it and the surface. The hologram zoomed in on the archive, showing a more detailed view of the gargantuan structure. It consisted of several levels, each with a number of chambers housing items or information. At the very bottom of the structure, one chamber stood out among the rest. 10 meter thick walls of an ultra-hard titanium alloy encased a small cell filled with toxic gas. Suspended in the middle of the chamber by hundreds of metal rods was a vacuum-sealed prism of diamond. Finally, inside the prism was a small metal cube along with a holopad.
I felt a chill down my spine as I studied the intricate carvings etched upon the surface of the artifact. I could tell that the carvings were of some language, but it did not match any that I could think of. “Within the records, this artifact was designated as Class-Hydrogen1. The Federation’s information classification system is far too complex to discuss in full, but in summary, the more important something is, the closer to 1 the atomic number of the element it is assigned will be. The classification is then proceeded by a 1 or 2, 1 signifies dangerous information and 2 signifies dangerous materials. For example, in this same archive we discovered an experimental and dangerous singularity generator with a classification of Fluorine2, which has an atomic number of 9.”
“To put into perspective how scary the idea of a Class-Hydrogen designation is, the second highest classification object on record is a self-powered anti-grav receptacle of strange matter. Strange matter will turn any other matter it touches into more strange matter, I shouldn’t have to explain why that is incredibly dangerous. The receptacle was classified as a Carbon2. There are 4 classifications between Hydrogen and Carbon and none of them are being used.” My blood ran cold as I listened. What power could this artifact possibly hold? The question in my mind was quickly replaced by another. Why are WE the ones being told this? Before the window of opportunity ended, I opened my mouth to speak.
“Permission to speak, sir?” Zhao looked at me and nodded. “I still have a question, and I’m sure my partners do too, but why us? Why did you choose to tell us this instead of someone more qualified?” “I’m glad you reminded me.” I heard the clacking of a keyboard as one of the men beside the President switched the holo-projector to a different tab. A close-up of the cube appeared, showing the four sides of the object.
The first side depicts a bipedal creature covered in spikes turning their back on two similar figures cloaked in blood and flames. The creature holds a defiant posture. Flames trail behind them, turning to embers, then to smoke, and then fading entirely.
The second side depicts a small fluffy figure being chased by a dark version of themselves across a variety of settings and locations.
The third side depicts a large being covered in scales bound in chains kneeling on an altar, their arms being stretched to two different sides. On one side a crowd of identical creatures and on the other side a crowd composed of different figures of varying shapes and sizes, both sides pointing weapons at the central figure.
The final scene depicts a man screaming in anger and sorrow pointing a dagger toward a small creature with bloodied hands. Tears stream down his face. A man and woman lie dead in the background.
A gojid, a venlil, an arxur, and a human.

2023.06.06 17:29 Mediocre-River5537 47 [M4F] #Northbrook - 12 things I have learned so far about affairs.
- A well-written post will increase your chances by a minuscule percentage but only luck determines how many responses you will get.
- If the conversation gets too hot too fast, either you won a jackpot or you are being catfished it's usually the latter.
- When you get an immediate response to a F4M post, it's your lucky day and you should buy a lottery ticket.
- Just because the conversation is going well for 2 days don't get too hopeful, it can crash and burn anytime.
- Just because the conversation is going well for 5 days don't get too hopeful, it can crash and burn anytime.
- Just because the conversation is going well for 10 days don't get too hopeful, it can crash and burn anytime.
- Just because the conversation is going well for a month, by now you get the idea.
- If you find your AP is getting too busy all the time, it's time to say goodbye and start looking again, which is what I am doing now.
- If you keep hearing a lot of "what about you" it's time to invest your time and energy in another person.
- It helps to clearly mention
- Who you are - 47 male living in IL, brilliant father, husband, fit and a terrible bathroom singer.
- What you want - Someone who could be an emotional cushion, and really make my grey cells happy.
- What your limits are - Goes without saying cant leave the marriage, abbreviated responses(hbu, hru, wbu etc), people who consider conversation as an interview where they just reply to the questions.
- If you did find a good AP thank your stars, most people don't get so lucky.
- Lastly remember, there is a person on the other side with real feelings and a heart that can break just likes yours, we are all a little broken to be here so pls be kind.

2023.06.06 17:28 Rinzata Found messages on my husband's phone to his "friend"
| My husband has a lady friend whom he known before we met. They talk chummy like this a lot to each other and he says she's always been just a really good friend to him. She was his friends girlfriend who would send him money and do things to help him out when he and his friend were in prison. I told him multiple times to stop talking to her because it makes me feel uncomfortable. I've asked him so many times l if they had any sort of relationship more than friends and he always said no. What really pisses me off is that he got all mad at me and made me feel like crap when I put a heart eye emoji on some random guys tick tock whom I've never spoken to video and gave me a hard time about it. But he can say I love you and xoxo to his so called friend and I just have to shut up about it. It makes me want cry. What do I do? submitted by Rinzata to Marriage [link] [comments] |

2023.06.06 17:22 Basic_wigga_48 The secret is in the Trees
Sorry foy my bad spelling,
Was just reading
u/TaranMatharu last post where he proclaims to have the answers to the shows mystery through tarot mythology.
The part that struck me was the word for trees in the Beothuk language- Annooee.
It then occurred to me that the trees are often not talked about as much as they should and are referenced.
Clue 1: Constant references to the trees
moving.
I dont know what it means specifically, but Victor has mentioned this a fe times and has stalked the trees.
Clue 2: The transporter trees.
This is very weird but very significant. Go in a tree and pop up somewhere else? This is magic associated with a tree.
Clue 3: The leaves falling off.
They are making it obvious that this is significant and if trees are losing leaves, then something bad is about to happen. Again, they emphasise it. Why did they choose a tree?
Clue 4: The symbol
Is it of a tree?
Clue 5: Talisman discovery.
This was in a fallen tree originally that Boyd fell into.
Clue 6: Boyd.
He went into the tree and popped up in the tower. Again, why a tree?
Clue 7: The woods contain unimaginable evil.
This is vague, but what are woods? a collection of trees.
Clue 8: Anghooey
Could this be the kids trying to subtley send a message about the trees to Tabitha? Since the word means trees in ancient red Indian? Maybe we will see a scene where they learn the word when alive, and are using this knowledge to hint.
Clue 9: Crows
The crows are rumoured to have a hand in all this, but Crows live on trees. Vague, but relevant.
Clue 10: The entrance
It is a fallen TREE!
I have not put it together, as I said, I dont have the answers, but perhaps its an experiment. The experiment is monitored by something in the trees.
Or it is the victims in the afterlife trying to help the living, but the evil is controlled by the trees.
